  NRL - EIT
EIT uses specially coated, normal incidence reflective optics and filters to image the sun and its unimaginably hot outer atmosphere with high precision and cadence.
Using EIT as a keystone for many other experiments onboard SOHO, scientists are striving to understand the nature of the mechanisms that heat the corona to temperatures far higher than the sun's surface gases, and that drive the solar wind outward at speeds of more than a million miles per hour.
EIT has four optical "channels," each providing images of the sun in a different temperature regime, and therefore a different "layer" of the sun's outer atmosphere.

To temper this, and simultaneously explain to their victim that the violence was not intended as a statement of antipathy, the word "eit" was developed.
It is important to note at this point that had Dr. Weineshausen not said "Eit", all humor value would have been lost, and it would have been viewed by all as a rude gesture of repressed sexual frustration.
During a physical eit, the eiter should verbalize the "eit" just as the object is leaving the eitee's hand.

SIDC - Solar Influences Data Analysis Center - Homepage
With EIT, the ROB is conducting scientific investigations of the local and global physics of the solar corona, and has initiated multi-instrument observing campaigns for that purpose.
As the coronal emission lines detected by EIT correspond to the coolest temperatures found in the corona, the resulting images are well suited to observe minor activity in the low-lying "quiet" corona.
Furthermore, a comparison of the global properties of EIT brightenings (duration, energy, peak flux) with numerical models of nanoflares [5] provide indirect evidence that the coronal and the transition region brightenings detected by EIT belong to a wider and possibly unique population.
