All Wood Wings: KA-3B Skywarrior Model, US Navy
The Skywarrior was the largest and heaviest aircraft designed for routine operation from aircraft carriers.
The initial role as a nuclear deterrent faded in the 1960’s with the introduction of the Polaris fleet ballistic missile submarines.
However, the adaptability of the A-3B design meant the aircraft could still function on carriers in the context of limited conflicts, such as the new war then breaking out in Vietnam.

A-3 Skywarrior - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Skywarriors saw some use in the conventional bombing and mine-laying role during the Vietnam War from 1965 through 1967.
The 282 Skywarriors the Navy purchased served well in many roles for more than two decades, the last USN Skywarriors retiring on 27 September 1991.
The Skywarrior could carry up to 12,000 lb (4,445 kg) of weaponry in the fuselage bomb bay, which in later marks was used for sensor and camera equipment or additional fuel tanks.

The A-3B variant was by far the most numerous Skywarrior version with several subvariants branching off from the B - these included TA-3B (trainer); KA-3B (tanker); RA-3B (reconnaissance); EA-3B (ECM aircraft); EKA-3B (tanker/countermeasure/strike aircraft) and one VA-3B (VIP transport).
The A-3B was only operated by the US Navy had a range of more than 1600 km and its maximum speed at sea level was 982 km/h.
The Hasegawa Skywarrior kit has only been around for a year or two and is really the only good example that one could purchase when it came out other than a tiny scale produced by Revell many decades ago, and I think a crude vacuform product was also produced by Rareplanes.

 EA-3B Skywarrior
The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior, a twin-engined, swept-wing jet aircraft, was the largest airplane ever designed to operate from an aircraft carrier.
The A3D-1Q was replaced by the A3D-2Q and was subsequently redesignated the EA-3B Skywarrior.
Redesignated in the early sixties to the A-3 series, the existing versions of the A-3B (now RA, EA, and TA) were joined by the widely used KA tankers and ERA and EKA multipurpose versions, as well as one VA for special mission support.

Aircraft History: The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior was one of the largest and heaviest aircraft designed for operation from aircraft carriers.
This of course confirms the fact that the same mould is used for a number of different Skywarrior variants, with the company having released the early A3D-2; KA-3B Tanker; NA-3B and EKA-3B versions as well.
Another confirmation of this is by the separate bomb bay part which could be replaced with an ECM canoe for that particular variant.

 Douglas EF-10B Skynight
In support of raids they identified and recorded the location and frequency of enemy radars and then passed the location to defence suppression aircraft who bombed the site, or alternatively, they jammed the radars with chaff and ECM.
The EF-10B's were very effective in this role, despite their age, and were used until well into 1966 when their role was taken over by RB-66 Destroyers, EKA-3B Skywarrior's and later the EA-6A 'Electric Intruder', the predecessor of the current EA-6B Prowler.
The EF-10B continued to serve in Vietnam until 1969 and was eventually removed from operational service in 1970.

At that time, I was assigned to one of the many 4 plane detachments for our EKA-3Bs (a plane that had many vacuum tube powered avionics systems) and that was the beginning of my association with the Skywarrior.
However, my Skywarrior experience was deemed too valuable and it was to VQ-1 in Atsugi and Guam with their EA-3Bs that was my destination.
With the number still in flying service and plenty of airframes to pick pieces from, I'd be quite surprised if the 'whale' doesn't have at least another decade in her.
