		The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is thankful to have reached a settlement in a civil case that arose due to the criminal conduct of former pastor Gerald Thomas.
		Prior to Thomas' arrest, the ELCA was unaware of the former pastor's reprehensible conduct toward the plaintiffs in the case.

	Shaping future of ELCA
		A memorials committee, appointed by the ELCA Church Council, the church's board of directors, met in Chicago June 26-27 to categorize the memorials and draft proposals for response by the assembly to each memorial.
		Bioethical research: In 2004 the ELCA Northeastern Iowa Synod Assembly asked the 2005 Churchwide Assembly to authorize development of a social statement that addresses "the theological, ethical, public and pastoral issues surrounding genetic research and therapy." It asked that a final proposal be brought to the 2011 Churchwide Assembly.
		The committee recommended that the memorial be referred to the ELCA Office of the Secretary, which, in consultation with various churchwide leaders, is to develop a report and possible recommendations to be considered by the April 2006 meeting of the ELCA Church Council.

	ELCA Studies on Sexuality Considers Options, Reparative Therapy
		CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The task force coordinating studies in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) regarding issues of human sexuality met here March 19-21 to consider the range of possible recommendations it could provide the church in 2005.
		In conversation with the task force, both Gutierrez and Throckmorton argued against the possibility of the ELCA blessing same-gender relationships from the position that it may discourage some who are struggling with their sexuality from seeking help.
		The ELCA Conference of Bishops, an advisory body of the church, stated it does not approve of such ceremonies.

		The ELCA formed a relationship with the reformed churches despite their DIFFERENCES in opinion, therefore you cannot say that the relationship is evidence of the ELCA changing their beliefs.
		The real doctrinal position of the ELCA has been exposed by three ecumenical agreements: the agreement to joint communion with Reformed churches, the agreement on justification with Rome, and the acceptance of the historic episcopate with the Episcopalians.
		If you mean to say that the ELCA is not deceptive since they are very open about their acceptance of mixing different doctrinal views together, we agree with you.

		Lutheran Disaster Response is a ministry of the ELCA and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS).

	ELCA Fact Sheet
		In order to be ordained in the ELCA, a candidate must be qualified academically and be approved for ministry by Synodical candidacy committees that use the Division for Ministry standards to screen applicants.
		Prior to the formation of the ELCA in 1988, there was no official policy precluding the ordination of practicing lgbt people in any of the three predecessor church bodies, although many studies have been undertaken among Lutherans over the past fifty years and some "social statements" issued.
		The first significant challenge to the ELCA's new official policy of discrimination occurred in 1989 two San Francisco congregations called openly gay/lesbian seminary graduates who were not on the ELCA's clergy roster as assistant pastors.

	News from Agape Press
		The ELCA currently has a ban on non-celibate homosexual pastors, but its Church Council recently voted that exceptions to the policy be made to permit the ordination of active homosexuals.
		Harrisville says this means that "such things will be granted on an unlimited basis, I expect." And that lack of defined limitations, he argues, sets up a double standard, since the Church Council failed to consider whether the exceptions would also be extended to heterosexuals in common law marriages.
		He contends that the denominational leaders have demonstrated they are out of touch with the people in the pews by taking their minority view and elevating it to the status of policy.
