<bb>>EMDb>bb>> <bb>>1800b>bb>> <bb>>hpb>bb>> Bb>-B - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
<bb>>EMDb>bb>> #511 was loaned to the Santa Fe to be a backup to ATSF 1 and 1A during the first year of the Super Chief's run, painted in silver.
The boxy carbodies of all but the Zephyrs were the work of GE 's Erie, Pennsylvania works, <bb>>EMDb>bb>> having not yet developed the ability to produce their own bodywork.
The two <bb>>EMDb>bb>> demonstrators, numbered 511 and 512, were built in May 1935 to demonstrate the future of passenger diesel power to potential customers.

By the end of the War, <bb>>EMDb>bb>>'s diesel production was in full swing, with a new improved freight locomotive in production, the <bb>>EMDb>bb>> F3, as well as new passenger <bb>>EMDb>bb>> E-units.
<bb>>EMDb>bb>> SD40 and the 3600 horsepower (2.7 MW) <bb>>EMDb>bb>> SD45 V20 were produced and proved highly successful.
That the victory of the diesel locomotive over the steam locomotive was, outwardly, such an easy and rapid one is thanks to the marketing and sales skill of <bb>>EMDb>bb>>, backed by its aggressive and confident corporate parent.

REPORT
<bb>>EMDb>bb>> manufactured over 400 of this very popular model between the latter part of 1963 and 1966, The body shape of the GP35 is that of the standard, utilitarian <bb>>EMDb>bb>> design, and one must look at minor details to distinquish these units from similar models.
The SD40 is a current model from <bb>>EMDb>bb>>, with Santa Fe's having been delivered in 1966, and SP's arriving the same year.
In the captions for the photos that follow, the builder is listed first (<bb>>EMDb>bb>> - Electro-Motives Division of General Motors; GE - General Electric; ALCo - American Locomotive Company).

<bb>>EMDb>bb>>'s F Unit
The FL9 was fitted with the <bb>>EMDb>bb>> 567C or 567DI engine, generating 1750 and <bb>>1800b>bb>> <bb>>hpb>bb>>, respectively.
In 1939, the Electro-Mechanical Division (<bb>>EMDb>bb>>) of General Motors challenged the steam locomotive in what many thought was an impossible battle, the hauling of huge loads of freight.
This inflexible arrangement was unacceptable to railroads and <bb>>EMDb>bb>> was forced to re-design the FT and later models with standard couplers.

Diesel-Electric Engine Operation - NE Rails
Further, GE and <bb>>EMDb>bb>> seem to both be able to sell their locomotives at about the same price, so railroads are not voting for one system over the other with their purchase dollars.
In the case of <bb>>EMDb>bb>> AC locomotives, the wheels have to be matched within each truck, since all axles in each truck are powered by a separate inverter.
They came in both A and Bb>. An A unit is one with a cab and controls, a Bb> unit is an engine without a cab, or with a cab with the controls removed.

The <bb>>EMDb>bb>> SD70M, this is a modern 4,000 <bb>>HPb>bb>> diesel-electric locomotive, it is most effective pulling heavy loads over long stretches at slow speeds.
The PA produced the same horsepower as <bb>>EMDb>bb>> E-series diesels, but did it with one only one engine, instead of two.
It was aquired for vNERR mainly bb> e cause I painted it and didn't want it to go to waste.

EMC/<bb>>EMDb>bb>> Boxcabs Page
According to Louis A. Marre, in " Diesel locomotives: The First 50 Years " (see Boxcabs Bibliography), 1995, page 363, <bb>>EMDb>bb>> built the mechanism and Bethlehem built the carbody (in 1930) and the S&H unit was delivered with a Winton 400-<bb>>hpb>bb>> diesel but soon re-engined with a gasoline engine.
An early <bb>>EMDb>bb>> boxcab designed for freight operation was their Model 60; this boxcab is very close in shape and appearance to the ALCos.
The story of Bb>&O #50 (later Alton, then GM&O), the world's first production main-line passenger diesel, and its two sisters, EMC demo units #511 and #512, is quite fascinating (to me, at any rate) and is covered on its own Survivors page.

The 2,000 <bb>>hpb>bb>> was achieved with two <bb>>EMDb>bb>> model 567 V12 engines developing 1,000 <bb>>hpb>bb>>, each engine driving its own generator to power the traction motors.
The <bb>>EMDb>bb>> E4 was a 2,000 <bb>>hpb>bb>>, A1A-A1A passenger train -hauling diesel locomotive built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois.
The E4 was the fifth model in a long line of passenger diesels of similar design known as <bb>>EMDb>bb>> E-units.

LocoNotes FAQ
When you look at an <bb>>EMDb>bb>> switcher, cowl or hood unit, look on the frame toward the right corner (no matter what side you are on) - on one side it will be near the "F", and exactly on the opposite corner of the other side.
<bb>>EMDb>bb>> Cleveland plant did not stamp frame numbers, that is why some early GP7's built there do not have frame numbers.
Now, you have <bb>>EMDb>bb>> building locos at London, Super Steel, CP Angus Shop, Sahagun, Juniata, and I am sure more to come, then shipping them to VMV or wherever for painting.

Nieuwsbrief - issue 32
The refurbished ICR coaches will be re-formed into 5 or 6 car push-pull sets with either a 1700 or an <bb>>1800b>bb>> on one end and a driving trailer, now being converted out of 22 ICR BkD’s after the pattern set by the Benelux push-pull driving trailers, at the other end (delivery between 2000 and 2003).
In the longer term NS-R locos will only be used on DD-AR push-pull sets (dedicated class 1700), a number of DDM push-pull sets (class <bb>>1800b>bb>>) but for the short term only on a number of long distance trains with plan W, K4 and ICR stock.
Clearly, these driving trailers will have the capability to work MU remote control with both classes 1700 and <bb>>1800b>bb>>, which cannot be MU'ed among themselves despite their likeness.

Trains.com - Those funny little numbers - what do they represent ?
<bb>>EMDb>bb>> probably had one of the most complicated and non-intuitive model designation schemes of any of the builders.
So a 600 <bb>>hpb>bb>> engine with a welded underframe was a model SW.
A 900 <bb>>hpb>bb>> engine with a cast underframe was an NC.

Thus for all the <bb>>EMDb>bb>> hoods that are equipped with dynamic braking (and thus rooftop d/bb> blisters), the 4-motors have one d/bb> fan, and the 6-motors (with 150% of the dynamic braking current to dissipate in the giant toaster grids) have two.
Correct - the layout of the <bb>>EMDb>bb>> road switcher or "hood unit" carbody filled the roof with radiator fans on the end away from the cab (this is the "front" for PRR units).

C&NW to UP Diesel Roster
Rebuilt by CandNW in February 1986 to SDCAT, using a 12-cylinder Caterpillar 3612 engine; derated to 3,000 horsepower because of limitations of <bb>>EMDb>bb>> AR-10 alternator; stored out of service from January 1990, because of odd combination of CAT 3612 engine and <bb>>EMDb>bb>> AR-10 alternator; the unit is also extremely heavy, at 410,300 pounds.
CandNW 6564 was built as PC 6237; renumbered to CR 6237; sold to CandNW in January 1984 and numbered CandNW 6465; rebuilt in January 1986 as an SD40R, with a 16-cylinder <bb>>EMDb>bb>> 645F3B, 3,000 horsepower engine; UP changed the model designation from SD40R to SD45R.
CandNW 903 was built under <bb>>EMDb>bb>> order number 7945; CandNW 950 and 954 were built under <bb>>EMDb>bb>> order number 7148.

Pioneer Military Loan
The fourteenth amendment was opposed by the southern states, and as a precondition of readmission to the Union, they were required to accept it (or the fifteenth after passage of the fourteenth).
All Southern states were readmitted by 1870, but Reconstruction continued until 1877, when the contentious Presidential election of 1876 was decided in favor of Rutherford Bb>. Hayes, supported by Northern states, over his opponent, Samuel J. Tilden.
Some historians have argued that the election was handed to Hayes in exchange for an end to Reconstruction; this theory characterizes the settlement of that election as the 'Compromise of 1877'.
