EMD E4 - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The EMD E4 was a 2,000 hp, A1A-A1A passenger train-hauling diesel locomotive built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois.
The 2,000 hp was achieved with two EMD model 567 V12 engines developing 1,000 hp, each engine driving its own generator to power the traction motors.
Compared with other passenger locomotives made by EMD before and after these models, the noses of the E3, E4, and E6 cab units had pronounced slants when viewed from the side.

EMD AB6 — a unique cab-equipped booster built for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad.
Cowl units, originally produced at the request of the Santa Fe, had a full-width 'cowl' body built on a hood unit frame which provided all the structural strength; the bodywork was cosmetic, rather than a load-bearing bridge truss frame as in cab units.
The vast majority were EMD engines and components inside a carbody built by another manufacturer, since EMD did not have the ability to build their own bodies until 1936.

 Electro-Motive Corporation
EMD can lay claim to being the company that ended the dominion of the steam locomotive on the world's railroads, by both producing high-quality, reliable locomotives, and just as importantly (maybe more so) knowing how to sell them.
EMD also built a turbocharged V20 that produced 3600 hp (2.7 MW) for the SD45, but that was their first and last 20-cylinder engine.
The 1960s saw EMD consolidate their position as the dominant locomotive builder in the USA; new, high power locomotives, like the 3000 horsepower (2.2 MW) EMD SD40 and the 3600 horsepower (2.7 MW) EMD SD45 V20 were produced and proved highly successful.

EMD SD60 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The EMD SD60 was a 3,800 horsepower (2.8 MW) 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
In 1980, the EMD SD50 series locomotives were introduced, but these were not a success owing to poor engine reliability.
EMD claimed that three SD60 units could replace four of the industry standard workhorse SD40-2.

EMD E1 Encyclopedia : E : EM : EMD : EMD E1 The EMD E1 was an early passenger-train diesel locomotive developing 1,800 hp, with an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, and manufactured by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois.
The E1 was the second model in a long line of passenger diesels of similar design known as EMD E-units.
The E1—along with the more-or-less simultaneous EA/EB for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the E2 for the Union Pacific Railroad, Chicago and North Western Railway and Southern Pacific Railroad—represented an important step in the evolution of the passenger diesel locomotive.

An EMD SDP40F is a 6-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division beginning in 1973 for Amtrak service.
Power was provided by an EMD 645E3 16-cylinder diesel prime mover, which generated 3000 tractive horsepower (2.2 MW).

EMD AB6 - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The EMD AB6 was a diesel locomotive type built exclusively for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (the "Rock Island Line") by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division and delivered in June 1940.
The Rock Island desired a locomotive which could look like an integrated part of the train during the Chicago-Limon portion of the route, but could then be driven independently to take 3 cars to Colorado Springs.
Since the small 3 and 4 car trains the units would have to haul independently were very light, the AB6 pair were built with only one 1,000 hp EMD 567 V12 engine, and a baggage compartment where the second engine would have been.

 EMC/EMD Boxcabs Page
EMD also built some boxcabs for the SF in 1935 and two 1,000hp E6 boxcabs (yes, Virginia, E6 boxcabs!) - see my Other Boxcabs page.
An early EMD boxcab designed for freight operation was their Model 60; this boxcab is very close in shape and appearance to the ALCos.
According to Louis A. Marre, in "Diesel locomotives: The First 50 Years" (see Boxcabs Bibliography), 1995, page 363, EMD built the mechanism and Bethlehem built the carbody (in 1930) and the S&H unit was delivered with a Winton 400-hp diesel but soon re-engined with a gasoline engine.

The EMD FP7 was a 1,500 hp, B-B dual-service passenger and freight-hauling diesel locomotive produced between June 1949 and December 1953 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
The FP7 was essentially EMD's F7 locomotive extended by four feet to give greater water capacity for the steam generator for heating passenger trains.
A total of 378 cab-equipped lead A units were built; unlike the freight series, no cabless booster B units were sold.

GP38-2 #252 was delivered from EMD in 1976 in the Bi-Centennial version with the center stripe painted red.
EMD's marketing department came up with the idea of changing the new locomotive's model number to GP30 to make it more competitive, at least in the minds of potential buyers.
This allowed EMD to evaluate the performance of various engine, generator, and transmission system components under load and at different altitudes by taking the 134 to Tennessee Pass and other locations.

EMD F9 - Wikipedia Light!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The EMD F9 was a 1,750hp B-B freight-hauling diesel locomotive produced between January 1954 and April 1957 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
Internally, the use of an 567C prime mover increased power to 1,750hp from the F7's 1,500hp.
By the time cab units such as the F9 were built, railroads were turning to the road switcher-style of locomotive, and the F9 was succeeded in most part by the EMD GP9.
