 AEM7
The AEM7 is an electric railway locomotive used by Amtrak on its Northeast Corridor routes between Washington DC and Boston.
A prototype design was sent to the US from Sweden in 1977.
The first AEM7 was delivered to to Amtrak and went into service in 1979.

Atlas Model Railroad Co. Product Review
EMD was chosen to assemble this new engine based on ASES mechanical components and bodies built by the Budd Company.
Its uniqueness was further bolstered by the fact that at less than 51’ in length and a weight of 101 tons, the AEM7 packed inside a whopping 7,000 horsepower, as compared to the heavier and similar length EMD F-unit diesel-electric which produced 1,500 horsepower.
While the AEM7 may seem to have a limited appeal due to its regional confines in the Northeast, I believe many HO modelers will find it to be a rather interesting locomotive design that will be a worthy addition to their collection.

 ATLAS O  -  Product Reviews
The first AEM7 went into service for Amtrak in 1979 and some 66 were delivered to Amtrak, Maryland State Railroad Association (MARC), and Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation (SEPTA).
EMD ceased production of the AEM7 in 1988, so in 1990, when the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJ Transit) went shopping for electric locomotives, it ordered 15 ALP44s that were assembled by ASEA in Sweden.
This is due, in part, to more space within the unit’s shell for sound hardware (the AEM7 uses a two-inch speaker), and in part to the quality of the source, which Atlas O states is a prototype AEM7.

Diesel-Electric Engine Operation - NE Rails
The other odd model EMD produced was the DD series, which had DD trucks (4 axles, 4 traction motors per truck) These were double ended diesels, and were roughly like 2 engines put together in one.
In the case of EMD AC locomotives, the wheels have to be matched within each truck, since all axles in each truck are powered by a separate inverter.
Further, GE and EMD seem to both be able to sell their locomotives at about the same price, so railroads are not voting for one system over the other with their purchase dollars.

The AEM7 is the prototypical "little engine that could,." Created as Amtrak’s successor to the GG1, it had mighty big shoes to fill.
Amtrak’s AEM7 is outwardly similar to the Swedish engine and is manufactured collaboratively by ASEA and the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (EMD).
The AEM7 is about the same size as an F-3 diesel, but the AEM7 has two cabs and a much shorter wheelbase, having precious little interior room for electronics.

At some point after the introduction of the new EMD E1 locomotives for the City of Los Angeles, the train was reassigned to the City of Portland to replace the M-10001.
In July 1941, the trainset was placed in storage after it was replaced on that route also.

The Atlas version of the AEM7 matches the dimensions of the drawings which were published in the August, 1985, issue of Railroad Model Craftsman.

When Kalmar was bought by the then new ABB firm, which was a competitor to EMD, Kalmar lost the EMD license - as did also Henschel, of Kassel Germany, which was also bought by ABB.

Part of the reason why is that (and I assume most of us here have Walthers Amfleet cars) I use conducta lube on the axles of my passenger cars.
If you combine the fact that my track conditions are less than desireable, I would say the HO AEM7 has a great deal of potential.
For modeling purposes, the AEM7 should not have trouble pulling up to 8 Amlfeets when the cars are maintained correctly and modified somewhat.
