Another early EMD locomotive was the BL-2, with BL standing for Branch Line -- a locomotive designed for service on the many non-main lines on the railways.
It was developed by EMD for the Union Pacific to commemorate the centennial of the Golden Spike Ceremony (it is often referred to as the "Centennial").

The D designation means a truck (set of wheels) with 4 axles, the A means a unit with a cab, the 40 was the next good sounding number greater than 35, and the X stood for experimental.
The first DDA40X was delivered in May of 1969, which was the 100th anniversary of the golden spike.

Many considered the four-axle truck arrangement to be very hard on tracks, but built as a cabless booster unit it would never be in the lead, and the effect on the tracks would be acceptable.
Based on the HP rating the DDA40X is the most powerful diesel locomotive ever built and coupled with the special introduction and the romance in the name "Centennial" it has become an icon for diesel rail fans.

The other odd model EMD produced was the DD series, which had DD trucks (4 axles, 4 traction motors per truck) These were double ended diesels, and were roughly like 2 engines put together in one.
In the case of EMD AC locomotives, the wheels have to be matched within each truck, since all axles in each truck are powered by a separate inverter.
Further, GE and EMD seem to both be able to sell their locomotives at about the same price, so railroads are not voting for one system over the other with their purchase dollars.

EMD began turbocharging the 567 around 1959; the final version, the 567D3A (built 10/63 to about 1/66) produced 2500 hp (1860 kW) in V16 form.
EMD also built a turbocharged V20 that produced 3600 hp (2.7 MW) for the SD45 that was their first 20-cylinder engine.
The 1960s saw EMD consolidate their position as the dominant locomotive builder in the USA; new, high power locomotives, like the 3000 horsepower (2.2 MW) EMD SD40 and the 3600 hp (2.7 MW) EMD SD45 V20 were produced and proved highly successful.

 EMD 645 at AllExperts
The EMD 645 is a line of diesel engines built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division.
The 645 succeeded EMD's earlier 567 series and was in turn replaced by the 710 series, but it is still sold and maintained by EMD for both locomotive, marine and stationary engine use.
The 645 series engine was introduced in 1965 in EMD's "40 series" (GP40, SD40) in 3,000 hp (2.2 MW) V16 form, and in V20, 3,600 hp (2.7 MW) form in the SD45.

The EMD DDM45 is a narrow gauge diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD.
The smaller traction motors of the meter gauge locomotive were unable to handle the full current capacity from the 3,600 HP prime mover.
And so, EMD proposed the meter gauge version of the Flexicoil-D four-axle trucks, similar to those found under the domestic EMD DD35, EMD DD35A and EMD DDA40X locomotive model, creating the DDM45 in the process.

The EMD SD50 was a 3,500 hp (2,600 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
The SD50 was in many respects a transitional model between EMD's Dash 2 series which was produced throughout the 1970s and the microprocessor-equipped SD60 and SD70 locomotives.
All of these prototypes were sold to the Norfolk and Western and passed to the Norfolk Southern; they were withdrawn in the early 2000s as non-standard.
