In 1939, EMD introduced a trio of locomotives utilizing its own diesel engine design and electrical system design, all built at their new facility in La Grange, Illinois.
At the end of WWII, EMD announced a successor to their E6 passenger diesel, the E7.
The E6 and E7 did not differ significantly, except in the short-nose design on the E7, which it shared with the company’s freight locomotives.

The EMD E2 was an early passenger-train diesel locomotive developing 1,800 hp, with an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, and manufactured by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois.
The E2, along with the more-or-less simultaneous EA/EB for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the E1 for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, represented an important step in the evolution of the passenger diesel locomotive.
The driving "A" unit of the SF set, SF-1, went to the Southern Pacific; it was likewise "rebuilt" into EMD E7 #6017.

RR Museum of PA - E7 Diesel
E7 No. 5900 and her sister unit 5901, now on display at the Museum, was delivered to the PRR late in September 1945.
Upon delivery of the two E7 units, PRR management sent the "orphan" locomotives to Harrisburg until a permanent road assignment could be found.
Since there were no fueling facilities for diesels between the EMD plant near Chicago and Harrisburg, 5900 and 5901 made the trip as a light engine move in order to conserve precious fuel.

1940 was wartime - the streamlined EMD FT was delivered to MoPac in a slightly less elaborate paint scheme from her passenger-assigned sisters, and invaded the steam ranks as it went into freight service to help the war effort.
The BL2 was EMD's first attempt at the still new diesel roadswitcher concept, it's hybrid appearance (it was a precursor to the yet- to-come GP7) of a covered wagon with a nose walkway could be considered as something of a "streamlined roadswitcher."
The unit was retired in March 1970, and traded in to EMD for the new SD40s.

The vast majority were EMD engines and components inside a carbody built by another manufacturer, since EMD did not have the ability to build their own bodies until 1936.
