  Union Pacific EMD F Units
The Union Pacific Railroad was an early convert to the benefits of dieselization, and as such, was the owner of the largest fleet of EMD F3A cab units and F3B booster unit locomotives in the nation, with 89 cab units and 90 booster units.
The remaining three cab units, 904, 905, and 909, were rebuilt to F7As by EMD at La Grange in late 1954 and early 1955, becoming the 1455, 1456, and 1460.
All of the 84 units in the 500-class F9s (41 F9As and 43 F9Bs) were completely remanufactured by EMD at La Grange, from the same number of F3s that remained in both the 1500 and the 1550 classes.

The EMD GP30 was a 2,250 hp (1,680 kW) four-axle B-B diesel locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois between July, 1961 and November, 1963.
Units ordered without dynamic brakes were the same shape, but lacked the intakes to cool the dynamic brake resistor grids.
EMD originally planned to name the locomotive the GP22, and the first demonstrators were put out under that number, but EMD's marketing department decided to leapfrog GE's numbering to make the new locomotive seem more advanced.

 EMD's F Unit
This inflexible arrangement was unacceptable to railroads and EMD was forced to re-design the FT and later models with standard couplers.
These units were 4 feet longer than the standard F and this additional space was used for more water tanks to supply the steam generator.
The F unit has been referred to as "the diesel that did it" by the editor of Trains magazine.

Early EMD sound is used in all F units, Geeps, and E units.
Early EMD locomotives had a very distinctive generator whine that could easily be heard whenever the motor was revved down.
In addition, early EMD locomotives had a unique transition effect that is noticeably different from second-generation EMD transitions.

Because of this the only accurate method to determine the carbody style that any particular 500-class unit had is to have a photograph of that particular unit, and that unit may have changed over the years as the high fans were replaced by the low fans.

Cotton Belt was the first to receive EMD F units, in the form of five 4 unit FT ABBA sets delivered in June and July of 1944.
The F A or cab units were given 61** numbers and the F B units or boosters were placed in the 8*** series.
F A or cab units were suffixed A and D, F B units or boosters were suffixed B and C. In 1949 SP decided the alpha suffixes had to go, and so a general renumbering of all system F units took place.

 EMD F units in passenger service....hmmmm... - Trains.com Forums
The steam generators were in the B units only, which was a feature of ATSF passenger F units right to the end.
E units had only four motors on their six axles, which made them more prone to slip, although SP bought E-9s with dynamic brakes for mountain use.
SP certainly had passenger F units for the same (steep grades) reason, and they lasted into Amtrak use, but SP had FP units with steam generators in the A units.

The FT renumberings are even more complex, as some numbers appeared on both A and B units, as can be seen by this initial chart which resulted from my first attempts to track these units.
