EMD F2 - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The EMD F2 was a freight-hauling diesel locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between July 1946 and November 1946.
It succeeded the FT model in GM-EMD's F-unit sequence, and was replaced in turn by the F3.
Power for these was produced by a new three phase alternator built into the main DC generator, called a "companion alternator".

 Union Pacific EMD F Units
The Union Pacific Railroad was an early convert to the benefits of dieselization, and as such, was the owner of the largest fleet of EMD F3A cab units and F3B booster unit locomotives in the nation, with 89 cab units and 90 booster units.
Both EMD and ALCO were selling their diesel locomotives as multiple unit replacements for steam locomotives, most of which averaged between 3,000 and 5,000 horsepower a piece.
EMD records show that 76 F7s were traded for GP30s in 1963, and 22 F7s were traded for the GP35s in 1964.

Introduction of the F40PH series was spurred as a replacement for the EMD SDP40F type, Amtrak's first series of locomotives built new for them since inception in 1971.
In some derailments the "hollow bolster" design of the SDP40F three axle truck became suspect as a possible cause.
This led to the introduction of the F40PH, based on the proven EMD GP40 series freight locomotives using a two axle truck of known reliability.

THE BRIDGE LINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY - Baldwin Sharks:A History
With over 1000 units sold of the FT, F2 and F3 units, EMD had become the industry leader with their F series engines and as such had dictated a certain style to their engines.
To compete with EMD, BLW introduced a style that became known as a "Babyface".
BLW looked back in their history and fondly remembered the Pennsy T-1s (4-4-4-4 Duplex) locomotive with its rakish look of speed and was relatively successful albeit a bit slippery and too late to make a difference with diesels on the horizon.
