cars - General Motors Electro-Motive Division
EMD can lay claim to being the company that ended the dominion of the steam locomotive on the world's railroads, by both producing high-quality, reliable locomotives, and just as importantly (maybe more so) knowing how to sell them.
In 1949, EMD opened a new plant in London, Ontario which was operated by subsidiary General Motors Diesel (GMD), producing existing EMD as well as unique GMD designs for the Canadian domestic and export markets.
The 1960s saw EMD consolidate their position as the dominant locomotive builder in the USA; new, high power locomotives, like the 3000 horsepower (2.2 MW) EMD SD40 and the 3600 horsepower (2.7 MW) EMD SD45 V20 were produced and proved highly successful.

Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad F3 #120, a 4-unit ABBA set built in 1947, hauling a 51 car freight in 1950.
This is a Phase II (early) locomotive with a smooth passenger pilot, and a gyrating signal light.
As built, the only way to distinguish between the F2 and F3 was the nose number panels on the A units, which were small on the F3 and large on the F3 and subsequent locomotives.

 Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe's CF7 Locomotive
EMD and GE engineers were quick to point out that once the carbody was cut through and removed, the structural integrity of the unit would be lost, and the unit would suffer from a constantly sagging frame.
For its part, the EMD 567BC was an upgrade where the B head was placed upon the C liner.
EMD designed the C liners to be cooled by water jumpers, so the upgrade would be relatively inexpensive.

F3 locomotives were used in both freight and passenger service.
In later years, many F3 locomotives originally intended for passenger services were downgraded to freight duty.
In later years, Santa Fe's F3 locomotives were rebuilt with new fans and side panels to duplicate the appearance of the newer F7 locomotives.

EMD’s F3’s began showing up on the rails just as World War II was ending.
With a body design that defines what many consider to be the most attractive diesel ever produced, the F3 offered a large canvas for the wonderfully imaginative and colorful paint schemes that many railroads proudly utilized to show off their passenger trains.
EMD was to build 1107 "A" units and 694 "B" units before production was changed to the newer F7’s in February of 1949.

This proclamation heralded the introduction of the new Lionel EMD F3 diesel units in 1948.
In all, 1,111 A units, and 696 B units were built from 1945 to 1949, before EMD began building its new pulling champion F7’s.
Not to be outdone, the New York Central purchased 38 F3 A units of its own, which could sometimes be seen lending a helping hand to L-3 Mohawk steam locomotives on heavy freight runs.

Cotton Belt was the first to receive EMD F units, in the form of five 4 unit FT ABBA sets delivered in June and July of 1944.
Beginning in 1949, SP began to receive 120 of the new EMD F7 model, from June 1949 thru October 1949, delivered in ABBA sets and numbered 6140A,B,C,D - 6169A,B,C,D. In December of 1949 SP decided the alpha suffixes had to go, and so a general renumbering of all system F units took place.

THE BRIDGE LINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY - Baldwin Sharks:A History
With over 1000 units sold of the FT, F2 and F3 units, EMD had become the industry leader with their F series engines and as such had dictated a certain style to their engines.
To compete with EMD, BLW introduced a style that became known as a "Babyface".
BLW looked back in their history and fondly remembered the Pennsy T-1s (4-4-4-4 Duplex) locomotive with its rakish look of speed and was relatively successful albeit a bit slippery and too late to make a difference with diesels on the horizon.
