Q1a Early EMD Notching and Transitions | QSI Solutions
Early EMD sound is used in all F units, Geeps, and E units.
Early EMD locomotives had a very distinctive generator whine that could easily be heard whenever the motor was revved down.
In addition, early EMD locomotives had a unique transition effect that is noticeably different from second-generation EMD transitions.

  EMD's F Unit
In an 11 month tour of 35 states and 20 Class 1 railroads, EMD FT (The F for freight and the T for 2700 horsepower with a 2 unit set) unit demonstrators #103A, 103, and 2 boosters, dealt a deathblow to the steam locomotive.
This inflexible arrangement was unacceptable to railroads and EMD was forced to re-design the FT and later models with standard couplers.
The FL9 was fitted with the EMD 567C or 567DI engine, generating 1750 and 1800 hp, respectively.

In addition to the more common models noted above, EMD built several motorized railcars, integrated streamliner trainsets, and experimental locomotives at the beginning of the streamline era in the late 1930s.
The vast majority were EMD engines and components inside a carbody built by another manufacturer, since EMD did not have the ability to build their own bodies until 1936.

EMD F7
The EMD F7 was a 1,500 hp B-B freight-hauling diesel locomotive produced between February, 1949 and December, 1953 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
The EMD F9 is distinguishable from the late F7 by having five, rather than four, carbody center louver groups covering the carbody filters.

 Union Pacific F9 or F9M
Photo research shows that CandO 7032's carbody is that of an F9 with the 5th louver set, and that by July 1964, CandO was still full CandO, but without a 5th louver set.
The 7033 went to the BandO in 1/68 and to EMD trade in 7/71.
Joe Strapac wrote that not every detail of the built-new F9 was added in—and, even more significantly, the units were not re-capitalized as "new," carrying their original 1940s build dates in official records.

 Rio Grande Diesel Locomotive Notes
During the late 1940s and early 1950s, many of the F3 units were sent back to EMD for upgrading to the more modern F7 specifications.
This unit, along with F3A 5531, was wrecked in November 1953, and was rebuilt by EMD under order 8032 in February 1954 with F9 carbody side panels, keeping all of its other its late F3-era features, including the 36-inch dynamic brake fan.
Because of the later F9 side panels, this locomotive has been confused regularly as being an F9, which it was not.

 RGZ Equipment
The usual power for the train was a matched set of three EMD F9 locomotives.
On our 8/14/82 trip, the power was one GP40-2 and one of the F9 B units (an experiment with fuel efficiency).
Since the ex-CZ cars used steam heat, a steam generator car was employed during winter (and later nearly year-round) to augment the steam provided by the two B units.

I've long wondered what it would have looked like if EMD had crossed an F7 with an SD7 to come up with a six-axle F-Unit.
Anyway, any present EMD or GE power that could be painted any of several different R.I. color schemes.
The units in primer for viewers to colour is an excellent idea, as it allows viewers to be creative, either by designing their own paint schemes or that of a fallen flag, or mimic a prototype.
