EMD FP45 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The EMD FP45 is a cowl unit type of C-C diesel locomotive produced in the United States by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors.
EMD therefore designed a lightweight "cowl" body to cover the locomotive, though it did not, as in earlier cab units, provide any structural strength, which remained in the frame.
A freight-only derivative, the EMD F45, was sold in greater numbers (86) to the Santa Fe, the Great Northern Railroad, and the Burlington Northern Railroad.

EMD 645 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The EMD 645 is a line of diesel engines built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division.
Each cylinder is of 645 in³ (10.57 l) displacement, hence the name; the bore is 9.1 in (231 mm) and the stroke is 10 in (254 mm), and the compression ratio is 14.5:1.
The 645 succeeded EMD's earlier 567 series and was in turn replaced by the 710 series, but it is still sold and maintained by EMD for both locomotive, marine and stationary engine use.

EMD F-unit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
EMD F-units were a line of diesel locomotives produced between November 1939 and November 1960 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
The original FT, as delivered, did not contain a steam generator for train heating, but a large empty space in the rear of their B units was used to add one on several railroads.
The F units were popular passenger locomotives on mountain grades (where they were recommended by EMD), because a four-unit set had more motored axles than a trio of E-units of equivalent power (sixteen versus twelve) and thus had less chance of overloading them.

Orange Empire Railway Museum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The museum's newest rail vehicle, ATSF 98 is a 1967 EMD FP45 diesel locomotive.
Relegated to fast freight service in 1971 when passenger rail operations were transferred to Amtrak, the FP45 was donated in operating condition by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe in 1997, but its size limits its use to occasional demonstration service and special excursions.
Like the FP45, the U25B is certified to run on any railroad in the nation and its two-axle trucks and 2500-horsepower (1.9 MW) prime mover make it an economical and ideal candidate for off-property work trains as well.

The EMD FT was a 2,700 hp B-B+B-B diesel-electric locomotive produced between November 1939 and November 1945 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
It was the first model in EMD's very successful F-unit series of cab unit freight diesels, and was the locomotive that convinced US railroads that the diesel-electric freight locomotive was the future, and that EMD was the manufacturer that could make it happen.
EMD however, was purely a diesel builder, and therefore was allowed to continue building diesel freight locomotives.

What is a Cowl Unit?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
It is used to differentiate these later locomotives from the earlier "cab" or "carbody units" such as the EMD F-units shown at left.
On a cowl unit, such as the EMD FP45 at left, a heavier underframe carries the whole weight of the locomotive.
The body of a cowl unit extends the full width of the frame as on a carbody unit, but it is merely a protective and decorative cover.

EMD had also built its own prototype cab, based on feedback from the SD50F road test.
However, EMD had concluded that the utilization of a cowl body, coupled with a safety cab, would be pushing the weight envelope for four-axle locomotive, and theoretically would have exceeded 305,000 lbs, which would have made the design one of the heaviest four-axle locomotives ever built.

The SDP40F was Amtrak's first effort in 1972 to find a suitable new, general purpose passenger locomotive to replace the aging fleet acquired from freight railroads a couple of years earlier.
The SDP40F used the frame and body of the EMD FP45, but with many body detail changes for passenger service, a shortened fuel tank, and new EMD trucks.
The result was a completely different locomotive from the FP45, though the profile remained the same.

The EMD SD50 was a 3,500 hp (2,600 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
It was introduced in May 1981 as part of EMD's "50 Series", but prototype SD50S locomotives were built from 1980; production ceased in January 1986.
The SD50 was in many respects a transitional model between EMD's Dash 2 series which ran from the early 1970s, especially the successful SD40-2 and the later high power SD60 and SD70 locomotives.
