 Arnold EMD FP9A & FP9B
Their new plastic shelled FP9 was a vast improvement over the old F9.
The new model is fashioned after EMD's FP9 freight-passenger 1750-horsepower unit.
Some clever individual discovered that the full-size FP9 was about 4 scale feet longer than the F9; and the Rapido engineers were off and running with a new American-prototype locomotive.

A total of 90 cab-equipped lead A units were built; unlike the freight series, no cabless booster B units were sold.
The FP9 and its predecessor, the FP7, were offshoots of GM-EMD's highly successful F-unit series of cab unit freight diesels.
FP10 locomotives are not the linear successors of the FP9, as their designation might indicate.

EMD F7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-26)
The EMD F7 was a 1,500 hp B-B freight-hauling diesel locomotive produced between February, 1949 and December, 1953 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
The EMD F9 is distinguishable from the late F7 by having five, rather than four, carbody center louver groups covering the carbody filters.
EMD used no such identification, and instead kept track of the marketing name (F7) and individual locomotives' build numbers.

EMD can lay claim to being the company that ended the dominion of the steam locomotive on the world's railroads, by both producing high-quality, reliable locomotives, and just as importantly (maybe more so) knowing how to sell them.
In 1949, EMD opened a new plant in London, Ontario which was operated by subsidiary General Motors Diesel (GMD), producing existing EMD as well as unique GMD designs for the Canadian domestic and export markets.
The 1960s saw EMD consolidate their position as the dominant locomotive builder in the USA; new, high power locomotives, like the 3000 horsepower (2.2 MW) EMD SD40 and the 3600 hp (2.7 MW) EMD SD45 V20 were produced and proved highly successful.

 EMD FP9
The FP9 was essentially EMD's F9 locomotive extended by four feet to give greater steam generator and water capacity for hauling passenger trains.
Regular F9B units were sometimes used with FP9 A units, since they, lacking cabs, had more room for water and steam generators.
The FP10 units were 'built' in the late 1970s by the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad at its Paducah, KY shops for the Massachsetts Bay Transportation Authority using former Gulf Mobile and Ohio F3 and F7 units.

The EMD FT was a 2,700 hp B-B+B-B diesel-electric locomotive produced between November 1939 and November 1945 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
It was the first model in EMD's very successful F-unit series of cab unit freight diesels, and was the locomotive that convinced US railroads that the diesel-electric freight locomotive was the future, and that EMD was the manufacturer that could make it happen.
Five EMD FT units survive today; they include the lead unit from EMD FT demonstrator #103 at the National Museum of Transportation at St.

In 1939, the Electro-Mechanical Division (EMD) of General Motors challenged the steam locomotive in what many thought was an impossible battle, the hauling of huge loads of freight.
The FP7 and FP9 models (The P for Passenger) were also offered by EMD.
The F also established EMD as the leader in diesel locomotive construction for nearly 50 years.

The EMD E6 was a 2,000 hp, A1A-A1A, passenger train locomotive manufactured by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois.
The E6 was the seventh model in a long line of passenger diesels of similar design known as EMD E-units.
Compared with other passenger locomotives made by EMD before and after these models, the noses of the E3, E4, and E6 cab units had pronounced slants when viewed from the side.

NOHAB-GM Foundation - Worldwide Historic Overview
The smooth surface was also a rare sight on the railroads of that time, as was the presence of swiveling power trucks with separate traction motors as opposed to driven axles held in a rigid frame, flanked by unpowered leading and trailing trucks or axles.
However, none of these cab units were, with respect to the number of units built, as successful as EMD, and GE's example showed that by the beginning of the 1960's, the reign of the cab unit drew close to its decline; railways were rather interested in the versatile hood design of road switchers.
With the acquisition by ABB, EMD's competitor and later by Adtranz, a GE licensee, Henschel departed from the builders of EMD export locomotives.

Eventually exactly one-third of the CN EMD F's were B's, and the same was true of the Alco's.
In the latter orders, every ABA consist had a steam generator in every unit, the EMD F's always being the longer FP7's; and the latter (or perhaps all, I'm not sure) Alco FA's being set up that way also, the numerals 2 and 4 designating this in some way that I forget.
GMD and EMD units of that era used a field loop (and a separate 3-wire cable) to control dynamic braking, whereas the GE system used by Alco and MLW used potential line control.
