EMD FT The EMD FT was a 1,350 hp B-B diesel-electric locomotive produced between November 1939 and November 1945 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
FTs were generally marketed as semi-permanently coupled A+B sets (a lead unit and a cabless booster connected by a drawbar) making a single locomotive of 2,700 hp.
EMD F7 The EMD F7 was a 1,500 horsepower B-B Diesel-electric locomotive produced between February, 1949 and December, 1953 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.

 EMC's FT Locomotive
The FT was conceived as a two-section locomotive, not as a four-section locomotive.
EMD published information on what parts were needed to turn a B section into a B unit and to modify the rear end of an A section into an A unit.
Evidently, the opportunity to convert dependent FT sections into independent FT units created enough of a "new" type of locomotive that EMD undertook to redefine its 1,350-horepower models to reflect the differences essentially in how the pieces of a locomotive could be fastened together.

 Union Pacific EMD F Units
The Union Pacific Railroad was an early convert to the benefits of dieselization, and as such, was the owner of the largest fleet of EMD F3A cab units and F3B booster unit locomotives in the nation, with 89 cab units and 90 booster units.
Both EMD and ALCO were selling their diesel locomotives as multiple unit replacements for steam locomotives, most of which averaged between 3,000 and 5,000 horsepower a piece.
EMD records show that 76 F7s were traded for GP30s in 1963, and 22 F7s were traded for the GP35s in 1964.

World War II changed the situation suddenly and dramatically, and by 1943 the War Production Board allotted 64 badly needed FT's to the Q. The FT's were delivered between December 1943 and September 1944 in semi-permanently coupled (i.e., with drawbars instead of coupled) A/B/B/A sets numbered 100 to 115.
The only modification present on the FT's delivered to the Q which was not on the demonstrator set tested some three years earlier was dynamic braking, ordered to help cope with the undulating profiles of Lines West.
Subsequently, however, the headlights were moved to the nose door when Mars signal lights were installed in the upper headlight casing in the late 1940's (after the F2's were delivered with Mars lights in 1946).

 EMD's F Unit
In an 11 month tour of 35 states and 20 Class 1 railroads, EMD FT (The F for freight and the T for 2700 horsepower with a 2 unit set) unit demonstrators #103A, 103, and 2 boosters, dealt a deathblow to the steam locomotive.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the FT, along with later F models, almost single-handidly ended over 100 years of steam dominance on the tracks.
This inflexible arrangement was unacceptable to railroads and EMD was forced to re-design the FT and later models with standard couplers.

 Cotton Belt FTA/B Info page
The FTs were put to work between Pine Bluff and Texarkana or Shreveport on the busiest part of the Cotton Belt during the war.
The Cotton Belt renumbered their FT's 901-924, not reusing any original numbers and in a strange order, so as to place the A units in the odd number series, the B units in the even number series; see SSW FTA/B Roster for details
As Cotton Belt did not favor the nose door signal light, a 'Gin Saw' herald in a fl outline circle was placed in that position, and roadnumber (where the SP 'Sunset' medallion would be), was placed under that also in a fl outline.

After transition to EMD in 1992, an integrated contractor/government test team conducted all tests until OT-IIA in 1994.
In addition, reliability, availability and maintainability of the EMD aircraft appeared to be significantly improved over those of the FSD aircraft.
New concerns arising from OT-IIC regarding the EMD schedule are being addressed by the program manager.

Thus for the moment, Reading's Motive Power Department was firmly set upon a course that favored high horsepowered steam for all road work and its postwar steam program went into high gear with both rebuilds and new engines.
However, despite this ambitious program, which included thirty high-capacity T-1 Northerns, 1945 saw the delivery of five four-unit 5400 horsepower FT freight locomotives built by EMD.
The flexibility, reliability, lower-operating costs and advances in technology associated with the FT's and subsequent models ultimately helped seal the fate of steam on the Reading as it was gradually phased out over the next ten years.

A mid-'70s arrival to the AHM roster, the EMD FT-A unit had a short life in this HO-scale version.
Very similar to the FT offered by Bachmann in the late '70s, it is possible the AHM model was made from the same molds at the Bachmann.
Below is AHM's ad from the February 1975 edition of Model Railroader magazine announcing the then-new HO-Scale FT-A Diesel.
