EMD was forced to scramble their design department as this new horsepower locomotive race unfolded.
EMD’s timing of the introduction of the GP35 seemed to be just right as a massive retirement of first generation locomotives was underway, and just like a new car dealership, railroads began trading in their worn out cab units for GP35s.
Generally, the GP35 is easily identifiable from other later EMD angled cab units by the unique cooling fan arrangement on the rear of the long hood — two 48’inch diameter fans with a 36-inch fan in between.

MoPac Power - Screaming Eagles Over the Prairie
The GP35 locomotive heralded the beginning of 2nd generation diesels to the Mopac roster.
The large white eagle applied to the long hoods, aka the 'screaming eagle' and 'turbo-eagle', would become a distinct new symbol of the company during the diesel era, and was eventually integrated into the company logo by the mid and late 1970's.
Both the GP28 and GP35 are identical in overall dimensions - wheelbase of 32' 0" and overall length of 56' 2" whereas the GP-38 has an overall length of 59' 2" and a wheelbase of 34' 0"

ElectroMotive Division of General Motors (EMD) introduced the “35 Line” in 1963, and the GP35 and SD35 were the first of the series.
The GP35 was the first to offer the angular cab that was to become standard on EMD diesels for over four decades.
EMD produced 1,333 GP35 diesels between October 1963 and November 1965 when the GP35 was made effectively obsolete by the GP38-2.

A further note of caution on photo use is when using detail photos on restored locomotives available in the current time, care must be exercised to be certain that details found currently on a locomotive are in fact appropriate for the time period you are modeling.
In the case of our GP35, Southern (SandA) 2715 provides a good resource and Bob knows the specifics he's looking for versus what would be inappropriate (an NS knuckle box on the walkway, for instance, is an NS-era detail that Southern units did not have prior to the 1982 merger.
If you choose to model one of the units equipped with the EMD sideframes, all you need to do is detail the Kato sideframes to your standards.
