Conrail inherited it's fleet of EMD GP38's from the Lehigh Valley (4 units), Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines (5 units), and Penn Central (139 units).

 C&O GP38 Project
The CandO’s first 50 GP38’s were built by EMD in November and December of 1967.
These units were early GP38’s without paper air filters (the CandO also later purchased 10 GP38’s, numbered 4820-4829, with factory-installed paper air filters).
If I were to build another GP38 at this point, I’d start with the Atlas model and simply add details to it.

MoPac Power - Screaming Eagles Over the Prairie
For the GP38, it was only a warm-up for what was to come as purchases of the later Dash 2 model would become the most abundant engine on the system.
EMD, in an effort to sell to the ever-loco-hungry road on its newest offering, loaned one EMD GP40 Demo to MoPac for evaluating...
The rail company would only own a total of six 2,000 hp GP 38 diesels (#572-577, later renumbered #2002-2007), purchased in October 1966 to replace wrecked units.

 Lexcie’s Norfolk Southern Pictorial Roster
Most of the high-hood EMD units all have dual control stands in them so they can be operated in either direction from the single cab, a feature similar to the class 20 in Britain.
Later, EMD also offered the GP-39, which has a 12-cylinder 645-turbo engine (2,300 hp) and was an alternative to the GP-38 with the idea of fewer power assemblies.
It would seem that by this stage either EMD had stopped making ‘high nose’ locos, or NS stopped particularly specifying them when the locos were built.

EMD GP38-2 HO Modeling: Conrail Cyclopedia
Radiator Grills: After 1976, EMD changed the design of their GP38-2 radiator grill filters from a single piece wire mesh affair to a rounded corrugated version, which is pictured to the right.
Dynamic Brakes: When modeling a Phase II GP38-2, you will need to make some changes to Athearn's dynamic brake blister area.
Locomotive Cab/Nose: The instructions listed above for the Phase I units applies here as well, except that EMD delivered these units with 88" low hoods, as opposed to the 81" hoods on the model.

 MRN N GP38 Review
The main difference between the GP38-2 and the GP38 is that the Dash 2 uses modular electronics.
With the release of the GP38, Atlas has filled yet another hole in their N scale, EMD second generation diesel line.
Production of EMD’s GP38 began in January of 1966.

Train Simulator General Purpose 38-2 locomotive
The EMD GP38-2 locomotive was introduced on January 1, 1972, and superseded the EMD GP38 locomotive series.
The biggest differences between the GP38 and the GP38-2 are for the most part, internal.
If you'd like to read more on the EMD series of locomotives, I would highly suggest a visit to the Fallen Flags website of George Elwood.

KB&S Unofficial Web Page - Locomotive Roster
By 2000 KBS had only a few Alcos in operations and leased several first generation EMD geeps to fill out their roster.
The fact was, that in the late 1970's and into the 1990's, Alco's were a lot cheaper on the resale market than EMD's of the same horsepower rating.
While it wasn't that the KBS preferred Alco locomotives over EMD, it just seemed that way to railroad enthusiasts.

All Time UP Diesel Roster, Part 32
Delivered to UP in May 1997; repainted to Union Pacific in May 1997 through April 1998 (UP 1930, ex EMD 777, and UP 1951, ex EMD 815, were the first, both completed on 4 May 1997, and UP 1952, ex EMD 817, was the last, completed on 9 April 1998).
Built as Penn Central units, to Conrail in 1976; lease to Conrail expired and EMD leased the units to MKT in February 1986; most (if not all) of the former CR units were briefly lettered as MKT prior to being renumbered to their final MKT numbers.
Built as Penn Central units; to Conrail in 1976; all 100 units (CR 7940-8039) were returned on demand to lessor/owner EMD on 15 July 1987; used by EMD as part of national lease fleet; renumbered to EMD 700 and 800 series numbers by dropping second digit (either 9 or 0) of PC/CR road number.

 MR N GP38 Review
Electro-Motive introduced the 2,000-hp GP38 in January 1966 and built 739 of them by December 1971, when they were succeeded by the nearly identical GP38-2.
For example, at 12 volts the GP40-2 ran a scale 167.8 mph; the GP38 runs 102 (still plenty fast, as 75 mph was about tops on the prototype.) At six volts they ran 91.7 and 35.3, respectively.
On big railroads the GP38 was a small engine; on small roads it was large.

No operational problems were observed by SwRI on any of the test fuels, and the locomotive engine was able to produce within 1% to 2% of full rated power while operating on the biodiesel blends.
