General Motors Electro-Motive Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EMD can lay claim to being the company that ended the dominion of the steam locomotive on the world's railroads, by both producing high-quality, reliable locomotives, and just as importantly (maybe more so) knowing how to sell them.
In 1949, EMD opened a new plant in London, Ontario which was operated by subsidiary General Motors Diesel (GMD), producing existing EMD as well as unique GMD designs for the Canadian domestic and export markets.
The 1960s saw EMD consolidate their position as the dominant locomotive builder in the USA; new, high power locomotives, like the 3000 horsepower (2.2 MW) EMD SD40 and the 3600 horsepower (2.7 MW) EMD SD45 V20 were produced and proved highly successful.

Dick Dilworth and the EMD GP7
Though EMD had developed freight, passenger, and specialized locomotives that could do most of the work of the railroads, none of them could economically meet all these demands.
Since the regular engineering department was already overloaded with the multiple tasks of modifying existing models, the task of developing a general-purpose locomotive fell to Advanced Engineering [a new department at EMD, created especially for Dilworth to relieve him of the routine engineering work that had become mundane for him after a 40-year career].
EMD had already attempted to combat this habit by turning out a branch-line locomotive, but this model had some of the appearance of the regular main-line models; so it too found its way onto the main line.

This unit was later renumbered to EMD number 100, and painted in a striking silver and light blue scheme.
The other two units, given EMD road numbers 200 and 300, matching the earlier 100, were soon completed, and the trio served to show their stuff on many of the nation’s railroads.
Number 120 was involved in a wreck in 1955 and was rebuilt in January 1956 by EMD into a GP9M, using major components from the trade-in, wrecked GP7, retaining the GP7’s 1,500 horsepower.
