EMD F9 - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
EMD F9
The EMD F9 was a 1,750hp B-B freight-hauling diesel locomotive produced between January 1954 and April 1957 by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
By the time cab units such as the F9 were built, railroads were turning to the road switcher-style of locomotive, and the F9 was succeeded in most part by the EMD GP9.

 The EMD GP9 Series
The General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP9 series, like its sister GP7 model, would find enormous success and even eclipse the GP7 in terms of sales to become one of the most successful diesel locomotives ever built.
Following the success of its cab units, EMD realized that there was a market to be made in the road-switchers, which at the time was mostly dominated by Alco with its RS series.
Not surprisingly, with the success of the GP9 and GP7 series, the units could be found on all railroads, large and small, and in use on main lines as well as spurs, branches, and yards.

 Union Pacific Turbocharged GP9s
UP GP9B 185B was completed in April and GP9 261 was completed in May. The tests on Cajon Pass showed that the units might benefit from additional quantities of cooler air to feed the intakes of the turbochargers.
The performance of the normal GP9 was not improved, at least enough to justify the expense of cutting openings in all of UP's then 245-unit fleet of GP9s and GP9Bs.
During the mid 1970s all of the 300-class GP9 units were returned to using diesel fuel, allowing the removal of the large pipes from the left side of the fuel tanks.

 EMD GP20 History
At this point in history, ALCO and General Electric were developing road switchers with as much as 2500 horsepower and for EMD to remain a competitor in the diesel market; they had to develop a locomotive that could match their competitors.
Even though EMD was reluctant to incur the possible maintenance headaches of the turbochargers on 4 axle units (because the increase in horsepower was not that great over the current GP9 model) they began production of the GP20 model in November of 1959.
EMD was even offering trade in allowances for older units towards the cost of the new GP20s as an incentive for sales.
