EMD SD50 - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The SD50 was in many respects a transitional model between EMD's Dash 2 series which ran from the early 1970s, especially the successful SD40-2 and the later high power SD60 and SD70 locomotives.
The SD50 was produced in response to increasingly tough competition from GE Transportation Systems, whose Dash 7 line was proving quite successful with railroads.

EMD SD50 Proto Info: Conrail Cyclopedia
EMD stretched the basic SD40-2 frame by a little over two feet for a total of 71'2", providing more room for the electrical cabinet and relocation of the dynamic brakes from the traditional blister in the center of the long hood to a more cooler and cleaner location directly behind the cab.
EMD says that the new Flexicoil trucks will cost big bucks because they hadn't sold one for nearly 5 years at this point, but they were selling lots of HTC trucks.
EMD converts the SD9/35 trucks to single shoe rigging, which is much easier to do than the other way around, and delivers the SD50's with the trade-in trucks.

The SD50 was Electro-Motive Division’s interim model which was the essential design step from the very reliable, but dated SD40-2, to the higher horsepower, state-of-the-art, six-axle SD60 locomotive.
EMD soon turned their attention to up-rating the 16 cylinder version of the 645 engine to performance levels approaching that of the SD45’s 20 cylinder engine.
Seaboard was the second railroad to purchase the SD50 beginning with 25 units in January, 1983, and were assigned to coal trains.

EMD SD60 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The development of the SD50 and SD60 series in the late 1970s and early 1980s was spurred by the introduction of 3,600 hp (2.7 MW) GE B36-7 and GE C36-7 locomotives by EMD's main competitor General Electric.
In 1980, the EMD SD50 series locomotives were introduced, but these were not a success owing to poor engine reliability.

EMD SD50 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The EMD SD50 was a 3,500 hp (2,600 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division.
While EMD's SD40-2 was a reliable and trusted product, GE's line included locomotives up to 3,600 hp (2,700 kW) with more modern technology, as well as very competitive finance and maintenance deals.
The SD50 used the same V16 645 as the SD40-2, but uprated to 3,500 hp from 3,000.
