All SD70 models up to the SD70ACe and SD70M-2 have the HTCR Radial truck, rather than the HT-C truck; the self-steering radial truck was designed to allow the axles to steer in curves, reducing wear on the wheels and railhead.

Then in 1972 EMD came up with the "Dash 2" system that is more or less several upgrades at one time...inproved eletrical controls in the cabinet, use of the AR10 altanator and on the SD series sightly different truck design.
EMD rebuilt a microprossor SD40 in the late 1990s, it was painted in the current EMD scheme of "wine and silver" paint and numbered 2000 (there is a photo of it on this site).
EMD was never able to sell the model to Class 1 railroads since companys like Morrison-Knudson VMV basically had the market in their respective corners.

EMD followed its successful wartime production of the FT with a heavy commitment to the F-type unit after World War II.
Here are some basic dimensions from my collection of EMD fabrication prints with regards to the discussion of lowering models, modifying frames and or building same.
Torpedo boats are EMD geeps with the airtanks in pairs along the edge of the long hood, rather than crosswise under the frame next to the fuel tank.

Further, GE and EMD seem to both be able to sell their locomotives at about the same price, so railroads are not voting for one system over the other with their purchase dollars.

The EMD slant-nose E's were used by many railroads, and the 3, 4, and 6 being nearly identical will allow a good model with a few optional parts to cover a lot of ground.
A Rail Power quality shell would be a nice addition to their line, because this is a relatively straightforward EMD design and there are tons of parts from Cannon, Detail Associates, and others which could be used to make a first rate model.
Seriously, the GP-59 looks similar to the GP-60, yet there are many external differences that make it much differrent and difficullt to kitbash.

 The Best EMD Had to Offer
Rio Grande SD50 #5517 (built by EMD in September 1984) and Union Pacific SD60 #6010 (built by EMD in April 1986) were the modern EMD power of the day in the mid-1980's.
For the most part, EMD's GP50 and SD50 series were largely prone to mechanical failure.
Seriously though, I know they were prone to a lot of small electronic and cpu problems, but the prime mover has been pretty reliable here in the last nearly ten years.

The nose and side logos of the EMD Demo units are nicely done, as is the thin fl stripe separating the main blue and white colors.
The EMD logo on each side of the locomotives should be taller and almost touch the bottom edge of the radiator grills, and the jack pads should be painted blue, not fl.
Both the EMD and the Soo Line models will need the vertical portion of handrails located in the step areas to be painted white to better match their respective prototypes.

In 1992, GM's Electro-Motive Division (EMD) introduced the new SD70 Series of engines, which come in the standard direct-current (DC) and alternating-current (AC) models.
The 70 Series also employs the HTCR (high-traction three-axle radial) truck that reduces rolling resistance in curves and lateral loads and therefore reduces wear on wheels.
EMD estimates this will increase wheel life by 20 percent.

The model is DCC accessible, but like Athearn’s SD70 you can put in a drop-in decoder but you need to wire it to the motor.
With the Athearn SD70 series the earlier three pole motors took a drop in Digitrax board.

The MAC model of the SD70 series utilizes AC traction motors as opposed to the DC motors of the SD70, SD70M, SD70I and SD70M-2 models.
Unfortunately the draw back to the simpler and more reliable AC motors are the much more expensive inverters needed to produce the variable frequency AC signal.

The last EMD SW1001 industrial switcher sold sometime in the late 1970s was over $950,000, for a darned 1000HP switcher!

Although SOO has officially been absorbed by CP, these units remain separate due to the conflict of their 6000 number series with the last of the CP SD40-2s.
So on the SD80, SD90 and later, the dynamic brake is at the rear of the long hood, behind the radiator.
As a matter of interest, SOO SD60s 6000-6020 were manufactured in 1987 by EMD of LaGrange, Illinois, but units 6021 and up (manufactured in 1989) were made by GMD in London, Ontario, following centralization of GM locomotive manufacturing there.
