Back in the 60's, Lindburg had a SW1 - not too bad, but the drive was a spring belt afair and it really did not run all that good.
The SW1 is built on the same frame, but the cab/car body is much shorter.
The only operating problem I have noted is that it tends to wobble at low speeds (although it does crawl quite well) because the universal joint is basically a length of rubber tubing--although Walthers makes a replacement universal joint to eliminate the problem.

It was renumbered 615 on August 23, 1971, and sold to Chicago West Pullman and Southern as 37 when it was retired.
It was renumbered 617 on July 27, 1971, and was retired September 13, 1978.
It was sold to Wilson-Cramer Locomotive Co. on June 1, 1978, was later sold to Farmers Grain Dealers Association in Avon, IA, as 1269.

All later units were delivered with EMD's standard conical switcher stack, while early units were generally modified with taller stacks too.
The sandbox in front of the radiator is somewhat smaller on the SW1.
Compared to later and switchers, the SW1 has a much shorter hood, large platforms at each end, only a single stack, and all later models lack the "satchel" sandbox in front.

SW1 #804 demonstrated in 'basic fl' with a white frame stripe, and a white pinstripe just below the hood handrail.
SW1 #1005 was transferred to the Houston Tie Plant and renumbered as SPMW #566.
SW1 #1006 was rescued from the steel scrap yard and resides at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris CA.

The EMD SW1 was a 600 hp diesel-electric switcher locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between January 1939 and November 1953.
The SW1 was the second generation of lightweight switcher from EMD, succeeding the SW and SC.
The SW1 appears very similar to its SW and SC predecessors, but has only a single stack instead of two, a significantly shorter hood and a larger rear platform, no small louvres on the front top hood sides, and a large grille instead of lifting vents on top of the hood front.

EMD made extensive changes in the units to accommodate the new power plants, including new control stands and wiring.
High-hood Alco's and EMD SW1's were sold to a variety of short-line and industry railroads; three of the latter dieselized the formerly steam-operated Duluth and Northern Eastern in 1963-1964.
EMD road power first appeared on the J in the form of SD9's 600-602, which were delivered in 1957; the long hood was considered the front.

Unfortunately, as with the case of the SW1’s, EMD was unable to deliver the units when WP management wanted them so the order was canceled in June 1945.
These units were interesting in that they were erected at EMD’s Cleveland, Ohio, locomotive works, not at its La Grange, Illinois, facility.
The exceptions were their three EMD SW1500’s, purchased from La Grange in 1973.

Ohio Central 4218 is an EMD GP30 built as CandO 3024 in 1963.
OC 736 (in Pittsburgh Union Terminal paint) was built as NYC 701 in 1949.

EMD order number E489 originally included four additional, an un-built SW1s for CandNW, EMD builder's numbers 1746-1749.
CandNW 1259 and 1261 were re-engined by EMD in 1960, using EMD 8-567C 900 horsepower engines and new EMD design long hoods.  CandNW 1261 was rebuild under EMD rebuild order number 8566.  CandNW 1260 did not receive an EMD engine.
Scrapped by CandNW at Oelwein, Iowa.  Long EMD hood used to replace wreck damaged long hood on GP9 1760 when that unit was rebuilt to GP9R 4529 in September 1978.

As built, the SW1 featured a water cooled, "V"type, two-cycle, six-cylinder model 567 A or B -series diesel prime mover with 8.5"x10" cylinders, turning a 600-volt D.C. generator.
Capable of 45 mph and carrying six hundred gallons of fuel, an SW1 weighs in, with individual variations, at one hundred tons.
During the fourteen year SW1 production, run changes and improvements took place increasing reliability, easing maintenance and modifying external appearances, including sealed-beam headlights and flat-top cab windows.

BFE #1366 is an EMD SW1, which started out as Chicago, Burlington and Quincy #9153.
The Walthers SW1 is the obvious choice as a starting point for this locomotive, but regretably they are getting harder to find and more expensive.
The SW1 seems small, and it is as locomotives go, but it's a giant compared to the Trackmobile.

The ARR retired this locomotive in 1975 and traded it in to EMD 4/75 on an order for GP40-2 units.
That is to say she was scrapped, although there may still be parts of her running somewhere today.
She is DCC equipped, ready to run passenger or freight service in MU with others of her class.

 Railroad Line Forums - L&W Loco Roster
In 1964, the L&W leased Central of Georgia #2, a 1941 EMD SW1.
Upon the retirement of #1000 in 1977, the L&W leased its last and current locomotive, another EMD SW1 #1004 (ex-Georgia & Florida #70).
I shot this photo sometime in the early 1980's when the L&W was still serving the pulpwood yard outside of Wadley.
