In '63--4 EMI artists topped the UK charts for a total of 76 weeks, all but one of the artists being British, but this success was not repeated in the USA, where Capitol passed on nearly all these artists (even the Beatles, whose first US records came out on Vee-Jay, later bought by EMI).
EMI put in team headed by V. Bhaskar Menon, former head of EMI's Gramophone Company of India (another large country where distribution was a problem), which succeeded in turning the company around.
EMI was the second biggest record company in the world in the mid-'90s, but in North America it was fifth (behind Warner, Sony, Polygram and Bertelsmann).

EMI has replaced the man responsible for the Beatles Anthology with Ken Berry, the creator of the Spice Girls, as head of its lacklustre American music business.
EMI, the world's largest music publisher and owner of the HMV music and Dillons book chains, also unveiled a capital repayment of around 10pc, or about £500m.
EMI also unveiled a £117m one-off charge to sort out its American business, which led to a fall in pre-tax profits from £376m to £284m.

EC competition officials were concerned that the tie-up between EMI and Time Warner's Warner Music subsidiary would have placed 80% of Europe's recorded music business in the hands of just four global giants.
But the EC said on Thursday that the concessions represented a "substantial" improvement, it "still had doubts, and in view of the late stage of the procedures, could not properly evaluate the undertakings".
EMI shares stood 33p, or 6%, lower at 525.6p in lunchtime trading in London.

LONDON (CNN) - EMI, the biggest music publisher, warned on Tuesday profit for the year would slide 20 percent as conditions in the industry deteriorate.
EMI said it plans to take a £100 million ($146 million) charge to cut costs and plans to combine its European and U.S. business in a bid to save £65 million a year.
As part of it restructuring, EMI said it is considering exiting the manufacturing and distribution business and is in talks with a number of potential partners.

EMI Group has released its preliminary financial results for the year ending March 31st, showing a growth in total revenue of 3.9% year-on-year to 2,079.9 million pounds (around US$3,922.4 million).
According to EMI, Skype now has license to use songs from the publisher’s catalog for downloading, subscriptions and master-tones on a world-wide basis (saying this is the first time such a deal has happend), though in order to do so, Skype must also get permission from individual record labels.
