As many as 30 movie theatres were reported to have been converted to live stages, producing a wide range of comedies and dramatic productions.
In 1534, Baghdad was conquered by the Ottoman Turks.
Baghdad's early meteoric growth slowed due to troubles within the Caliphate, including relocations of the capital to Samarra (during 808–819 and 836–892), the loss of the western and easternmost provinces, and periods of political domination by the Iranian Buwayhids (945–1055) and Seljuk Turks (1055–1135).

 Anti-Hit List
One of Australia's most engaging bands fulfills the promise of its early EPs with an album of textured, accomplished pop.
If Ian Dury had been born in 1980, he might've sounded a bit like Mike Skinner, the 22-year-old Birmingham mastermind behind this heady garage/hip-hop/soul stew.
Now, if only this could catch some attention on these shores.

 Drill - TheBestLinks.com - Drilling, Brass, Iron, Oil, ...
The twist drill is most common, consisting of a cylindrical metal rod with two helical "flutes" or grooves spiralling along its length.
The drill bit is held by the drill at one end, with the other end being pressed against the target material and rotated.
Oil-hole drilling can be used in a conventional drill press arrangement, but is more commonly seen in automatic drilling machinery in which it is the workpiece that rotates rather than the drill bit.

Ride (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The EP showed that the band was maturing quickly and producing material that was more subtle and complex than their releases barely 12 months previously.
The first two EPs were eventually released together as Smile years later in 1992, while the Fall EP was incorporated into their first LP, Nowhere, released in October 1990.
Carnival of Light was oriented towards this new sound to some extent, but sales were sluggish and the shift in musical tastes devastated much of their original audience.

The Mars Volta: Tremulant - PopMatters Music Review
But it's quite clear from the Tremulant EP that Bixler and Rodriguez, who essentially forced At the Drive-In's premature end by walking out on the band, are not content to stay within the rock's rigid confines.
Despite all its keyboard flourishes and arty nuances, Relationship of Command was still very much tethered to the basic rock 'n' roll paradigm: 4/4 time, throat-shredding screams, and guitar, guitar, guitar.
Sometimes the results were so jarring that it sounded as though two songs were duking it out in the space of three minutes.

Only Angels Have Wings : The Mars Volta - Tremulant
I was quite surprised and a little disappointed by this ep, I had heard some demos and live tracks a few months ago and some of the songs I heard then are really better than what they released on this ep.
Brief bio : the two founding members of The Mars Volta, Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez were part of At the Drive-In and since the other guys in At the Drive-In decided to do their own thing (they're called Sparta now, they've got an ep out on dreamworks records) they decided to do the same.
"Concertina" is the best song to be heard on this ep, through which The Mars Volta really impresses and almost makes us feel like stopping crying over ATDI's ashes.

Verve were the next Great White Hope to follow Suede - but whereas Brett and Co. proved to be smart gameplayers in that rocky road between critical fervouri favour and commercial nous, Verve issued a string of unfocused pieces (songs would be too restrictive a term), which explored instead the possibilities of multi-layered electronic sound.
The "Gravity Grave" EP trod water, too, the lead track slumped over a mournful pulsel echo, as if the Velvet Underground were interpreting whale noises before drifting into some dream state.
Verve were officially born that August with a local birthday party pub gig and all the ingredients were there, from Ashcroft's meandering vocal wails to the band's, er, meandering, effects-laden music.

The Mars Volta: Tremulant EP: Pitchfork Review
The guitar interaction in these tripped-out effect-storms is often interesting and complex, and they're actually just fine within the scope of this EP, but they could easily drain all the vitality from the EP if it weren't for Jon Theodore's absolutely stellar drum work.
But, as the old saying goes, "A fool and his money are soon parted for the new Tremulant EP by The Mars Volta." As I put down the greenbacks, these guys-- including Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez of At the Drive-In fame-- instantly had one strike against them.
Even when Tremulant seems lost in a mire of screeching distortions and echo-pedaling, a constant undercurrent of desperate urgency is preserved by the frantic drive of Theo's shifting tempos.
