Even now the government guidelines to the EPF on its investment pattern are aimed at securing in the government kitty the bulk of accretions to the EPF funds.
By seeking a higher rate of interest on EPF, the trade unions are not asking for any undue reward or favour; they only seek from the government an adequate real rate of return to the members of the salaried class for the compulsory impounding of their hard-earned savings.

Today's EPF rate is 9.5 per cent, and while inflation rates go up and down, the average for the year in 2002-03, was 3.3 per cent.
Because the EPF represents comprehensive social security, I think it should be de-linked from the so-called interest rate regime that applies to the government's commercial activity.

EPF is a statutory contribution deducted from employees' salaries.
Employees' contribution to EPF is eligible for deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act and at present earns a tax-free return of 8.50%.

 CBT to decide on EPF rate soon
Evading the finance ministry's pressure for a cut in EPF rate from the present 9.5 per cent in the light of falling interest rate, Labour Minister Sahib Singh Verma, who is the chairman of CBT, has been saying he was not in favour of any cut and the sub-committee would decide on it.
It is understood that the sub-committee had weighed all options, especially in the wake of one per cent cut in interest rate of special deposit schemes, which comprise over 80 per cent of the Rs 1,40,000 crore (Rs 1,400 billion) EPF corpus.
Finance ministry sources said the present 9.5 per cent was not sustainable due to lack of interest rates on savings instruments, especially after the centre aligned the interest rates in the economy to the yields from government securities.

EPF surgery involves cutting a portion of the plantar fascia, as a result scar tissue can form and basically cause the cut ends to "reattach" causing tightness of the plantar fascia.
What is soooo strange is that no one is ever at fault, no accountability what so ever and the patients are sent to pain clinics to control unbearable pain for the rest of their life.
I have insurance, but it only pays 80% and a lot of these procedures like 2 EPF's on one foot are not covered for the same thing twice.

In addition, the EPF was left out of the baseline budget passed in the fall of 2001 and the deficiency budget that was passed in March 2002.
