Ensoniq EPS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The EPS also used an integrated floppy disk drive (sourced from Sony or Matsushita), and an expansion bay that could be used to add a SCSI controller supporting SCSI hard disk and CD-ROM drive units.
The key limitations of the EPS were its proprietary disk format, software faults in some operating system releases and a lack of support from Creative Technology, the current owner of Ensoniq.
The the EPS uses MIDI and can be used as a controller of other instruments, or linked to a PC or Macintosh.

 Randy Chance EPS Info Page
EPS must have "sys ex on", seems to work in multi mode, "transmit on instru chanl" seems to work, create new instrument so you have some place to send the new sample.
By the late 80's they had perfected their design in the release of the EPS, and taken electronic music to a level of stage performance that was only dreamed of just a few years earlier.
There are two manuals that accompanied the EPS, a sort of beginner's manual, which you can still order for about $18.00, and a "deeper" manual, which is now out of print.

 Destination - Ensoniq EPS/ASR
Ensoniq upgraded the design to full 16-bit and added digital effects, in the 1990-released EPS 16-Plus, and finished off the platform with the ASR-10 (1992), adding SIMM memory up to 16mb and stereo sampling.
EPS means Ensoniq Performance Sampler, and to this day it is noted for that role.
The EPS was the successor to the famous (or infamous) and enormously popular Mirage.

 Ensoniq EPS
Basic use of the EPS is quite elegant, and the on-board sequencer is probably the coolest one ever implemented...
The disks that came with the eps are a joke compared to the signature series disks that were created years later.
The sampling from the eps input is good to poor.

 Ensoniq EPS-16+
Ensoniq no longer supports this product, However there is a tremendous amount of help from users on the EPS mailing list, and on various web sites.
The filters on the eps are another weak point, they lack resonance and realtime tweakability- but you can emulate this to a degree by modulating the start point of a resonant wavesample via modwheel.
EPS 16+ is a 16 bit sampler w/ 2 Meg memory, upgradeable to 4 Meg.

Ensoniq EPS/ASR to Akai S5000-Z Series Translation
Ensoniq Banks simply refer to the loading of seperate Ensoniq Instruments at one time.
The OO patch select inherits the Ensoniq Instrument name, while the other.akp files get either OX, XO, or XX added to the end of the file name.
This destination format does not support keyswitching, which is a function where pressing a non-sounding key (or a Patch Select in the case of Ensoniq) instructs the sampler engine to switch what samples play on what key.

Vintage Synth Explorer - Ensoniq EPS
The EPS is somewhat multitimbral in that you can have 8 instruments on-line one at a time or stacked* and switching between them is as easy as pushing one of the 8 instrument buttons.
The EPS is just that with clever new features that make it not just a professional studio music production tool, but also a powerful live performance instrument.
With the EPS in Load mode by first selecting an instrument and then double clicking another instrument both will be played together.

Ensoniq ASR, EPS & EPS-16 Plus Tech Info from Syntaur Productions
From the factory, the EPS shipped with 512k of sample RAM, and it could be expanded either to 1 Meg or 2 Meg, using either a 2x or 4x memory expander cartridge.
If you are using an EPS or an EPS-16 Plus, you must also have a memory expander cartridge installed, as the SCSI board physically mounts onto the expander.
While ASR-10 sample files are in a compatible format, they are typically stored on high-density (HD) disks, which the EPS will not recognize.

TS Station - For the Ensoniq TS ASR EPS Serires Keyboards
They will however play samples for the Ensoniq EPS and Ensoniq ASR keyboards for which there is a huge sample library available.
While the site is geared towards the TS series keyboards from Ensoniq, most of what is here works for the ASR and EPS Ensoniq series keyboards.
But due to the overwhelming amount of email I receive about this software, I've decided to write a tutorial that is a sort of "EPSDisk for Dummies".

 Ensoniq EPS/ASR KB - 10
Ensoniq EPS floppy drives adhere to the old Shugart floppy standard, which is not compatible with the new AT standard, which the ASR-10 uses.

Ensoniq EPS - A Great Keyboard!
The EPS Sampler Keyboard was released in 1988 by a Ensoniq, a medium-sized producer of musical equipment and hearing aids based in Malvern, PA. "EPS" stood for "Ensoniq Performance Sampler", and is now referred to as the EPS "Classic".
The EPS Sampler is really a computer, and in fact has a 68000 processor inside, the same processor as the Macintoshes of the day.
My EPS is set up with my bass samples (acoustic bass if I play hard, P-bass if I play soft) from middle C down, and the other instruments from middle C up.

 ENSONIQ CD LIST
This hip-hop CD-ROM from Ensoniq is great for both the ASR and EPS-16 Plus, as all of the samples will fit in the stock EPS-16 memory.
Caution: Many of these sounds are too large to load into an EPS-16 Plus, and will require an ASR with expanded memory.
This CD ROM also covers MOOG warm pads, filter sweeps, polysynths, polybrass, bass sounds, buzzy sawtooth, wah filter polysynth, sample and hold modulation to oscillator, analog strings, sine and square wave synths.

 Synthmuseum.com - Ensoniq
'The EPS and SQ-80 were intended to address the professional market, but we know our bread and butter is in the low end.' In 1998 Ensoniq, like E-mu before it, became part of Creative Technologies.
In 1982 he designed a portion of a PC that was similar to the sound synthesizer that ended up in the Amiga.
Bob Yannes, on of Ensoniq's cofounders, was responsible for designing the Commodore 64's three-voice synth chip.

 GUIDE.TXT
The data image of an EPS diskette can be saved on a PC hard disk as a.IMG file or as a.GKH file.
Other features of EPSDisk include an option that verifies the integrity of either an Ensoniq disk or a.IMG/.GKH file, and a sector editor that lets you edit the binary information of the Ensoniq disk or the.IMG/.GKH file.
If you select option 0), you are led through a series of questions concerning number of tracks, sides, sectors per track, interleaving, gap, sector offset, head sector shift, and track sector shift (the explanation of which extends beyond the scope of this document).

KEYS Magazine our beloved Ensoniq synth was featured for which they interviewed me.
And, since support for the ancient Ensoniq machines is vanishing more and more, I'd like to settle up a repair center for these.
Also, I'll share my knowledge with you on these pages, so everybody of you who is electrically skilled (or has a friend who is) would be able to build cartridges and expansion modules instead of buying them for terrific prices.

 TS Station - Ensoniq Documentation
EPS and EPS-M users must have at least EPROM 2.40 to support Fujitsu, Conner Peripherals, or Quantum Pro SCSI devices.
EPS-16 PLUS owners who are considering using SCSI should understand they will need to have an ENSONIQ memory expander in their units to use SCSI.
You must format your drive and copy data from another instrument (ASR or EPS Series) or PC or Mac with the appropriate utility software.
