 ESCON - a Whatis.com definition
ESCON (Enterprise Systems Connection) is a marketing name for a set of IBM and vendor products that interconnect S/390 computers with each other and with attached storage, locally attached workstations, and other devices using optical fiber technology and dynamically modifiable switches called ESCON Directors.
In IBM mainframes, the local interconnection of hardware units is known as channel connection (and sometimes as local connection to distinguish it from remote or telecommunication connection).
ESCON, Fibre Channel, and Small Computer System Interface are three alternative technologies used in storage area networks (storage area network).

ESCON MUX Optical Card Product Overview - Ciena
The ESCON MUX Optical Card enables the CN 2600 Multiservice Edge Aggregator to multiplex 12 ESCON signals into a single OC-48 wavelength, making it the highest density ESCON MUX card in the industry.
It monitors the fidelity of the received signals in their native ESCON format, enabling service providers to guarantee Service Layer Agreements (SLAs) and provide easier fault isolation, in case of a service outage.
Once the ESCON channels are mapped into an OC-48/STM-16 payload, the aggregate signal is converted into a Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) wavelength using pluggable Gigabit interface converters.

ESCON vs Ethernet [Mon, 29 Mar 2004]
I have done some elimentary reading on ESCON, and it appears that the channel connection can cover that distance, but the network and system architechture teams are questioning the need for that type of connectivity and are proposing dedicated ghz ethernet.
ESCON is a somewhat direct connect and ethernet would involve gateways, firewalls, and other nodes.
ESCON has dedicated PE's, but unless we approach the 1200 sessions per node/gateway limit is this a problem?

 IDM.net.au
Switch manufacturer McData has built on its ESCON (Enterprise System Connection) ties with IBM with the release in the US of FICON Management Server software, which is designed to allow automated control of FICON and ESCON storage networks from one interface.
FICON, a combination of Fibre Channel and ESCON, promises transfer rates of 100MB per second (whereas ESCON offer 17MB per second), and has become one of the connection technology focuses for IBM as it made FICON available in Shark Enterprise Server.
FICON Management Server is a step towards supporting this migration strategy from multiple ESCON channels to a single FICON channel, as it provides users with management capabilities of McData's Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Manager in-band to retain the look and feek of IBM's System Automation for OS/390.

Optica Technologies Inc - PRIZM™ FICON to ESCON Protocol Converter Appliance
FICON migration at the host level without the disruption and cost of upgrading to FICON devices offers IT managers many potential advantages including relief for ESCON channel constraints, consolidation or elimination of ESCON director infrastructure that can be costly to maintain, and the ability to progress to a single and consistent cable infrastructure.
Prizm provides a means for phased migrations as technology is refreshed on the mainframe, but not necessarily at the device level due to storage device leasing cycles or simply based on a desire to continue to utilize existing, fully depreciated ESCON storage assets.
In many cases, Prizm could replace existing ESCON channel extension solutions that are harder to manage and costly to maintain.
