 Partnership for Water Education and Research
ESCWA promotes economic and social development through regional and sub-regional cooperation and integration and serves as the main general economic and social development forum within the United Nations system for the ESCWA region.

ESCWA was the first regional commission to hold these hearings, which were aimed at discussing the role of the United Nations during the twenty-first century, especially from the point of view of institutions of civil society.

The report was presented to the Council on its 59th Session held at the UN in New York from 28 June to 23 July 2004.

An ESCWA report released on Tuesday revealed that the economies of member countries grew by 5.1 percent in 2000, mainly fueled by a surge in oil prices and income.
Economies in the ESCWA region grew by 2.6 percent in 1999 and 1.7 percent in 1998.
ESCWA did not provide an overall unemployment figure, but said that figures published by the governments are at least a third lower than estimates by independent organizations.

The ESCWA figures show that the region’s small share of world FDI diminished to a tiny 0.16% in 2001, while the region’s share of FDI to developing countries has also shrunk to just 0.58%.
The causes of the ESCWA (and wider Middle East) region’s poor performance in attracting FDI are widely attributed to regional instability and the structural weaknesses of regional economies.
ESCWA total should be interpreted as the sum of FDI inflows to each ESCWA member country.

Of course, ESCWA should also be the channel for feeding the universal level with the concerns, views and contributions of the region in global debates.

The report, titled Economic and Social repercussions of the Israeli Occupation on the Living Conditions of the Palestinian People in the Occupied Palestinian Territory said that from December 2002 to December 2003, the Israeli Army demolished 511 homes in the West Bank, of which 77 were shelters for refugees.

Since 1990, the United Nations has hosted seven major conferences to encourage world leaders and policymakers to set common goals for confronting a number of global problems, including destruction of the earth's natural resources, rapid population growth, poverty, inequality of women, and widespread housing shortages.
While implementation of recommendations stemming from these conferences remains the responsibility of the member states, UNDP and ESCWA will support their efforts through advocacy and by developing indicators useful for policy, strategy and programme development, and for measuring their effectiveness.
