Enhanced Small Disk Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ESDI improved on ST-506 by moving certain parts that were traditionally kept on the controller (such as the data separator) into the drives themselves, and also generalising the control bus such that more kinds of devices (such as removable disks and tape drives) could be connected.
ESDI used the same cabling as ST-506 (one 34-pin common control cable, and a 20-pin data channel cable for each device), and thus could easily be retrofitted to ST-506 applications.
ESDI could handle data rates of 10, 15, or 20 megabits per second (as opposed to ST-506's top speed of 7.5 megabits), and many high-end SCSI drives of the era were actually high-end ESDI drives with SCSI bridges integrated on the drive.

ESDI Cable Pinout   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
ESDI uses similar connections to those of the ST506 interface, including the same two-cable system.
ESDI was also designed with the idea of adapting the interface to tape systems, although it has not won wide acceptance for that application.
In the case of hard disks, ESDI goes beyond ST506 by allowing configuration and bad track information to be stored on the drive itself.

 The ESDI approach to Indicators
The ESDI project leaders decided in 2001 that they would choose indicators that measure changes in capital in three sectors — human, natural and produced — that we need for a successful economy and that will be needed by future generations.
In its initial discussions, the ESDI is looking at several measures of this human capital, including education levels in working age people, scores on literacy and numeracy tests, health-adjusted life expectancy and self-reported overall health status (how we feel about the state of our own health).
The ESDI is guided by a 25-member steering committee including representatives from other sustainability indicator initiatives, from business, labour, not-for-profit organizations, and academic and research institutions.

 Enhanced Small Device Interface (ESDI)
ESDI was developed in the mid-1980s by a consortium of hard disk manufacturers led by Maxtor.
While ESDI was a real improvement over the older ST-506/ST-412 interface, it was "too little, too late" in a lot of ways.
In the late 1980s ESDI suffered under competition from IDE/ATA in the mainstream market and from SCSI in the high-end market, both of which offered significant advantages over ESDI, such as simpler configuration, lower cost and improved performance.

The Environment and Sustainable Development Indicators (ESDI) Initiative was a three-year multistakeholder program aimed at developing a small set of credible and understandable indicators to track whether Canada's current economic activities threaten the way of life for future generations.
This initiative - which was announced in the Finance Minister's 2000 Budget Speech - marked the first time a federal finance minister acknowledged the need and urgency to track a full range of Canada's assets - including the ecosystem services that are crucial to sustaining the economy in the long term.
The ESDI Initiative's final State of the Debate report entitled, Environment and Sustainable Development Indicators for Canada, includes the findings and recommendations from extensive research and multistakeholder consultation.

The aims of the member states of the EU are too disparate to underpin a coherent foreign policy, as has been clear in several crises, from the Falklands War to the Gulf and Yugoslav crises.
Thus the ESDI is designed less to describe a genuine identity of interests than to justify the EU in building a military apparatus appropriate to a unified state.
Given France's historical antipathy to US 'hegemony', reflected in its refusal to join NATO's integrated command, the ESDI poses the question whether the EU means to strengthen its capacities within NATO (a burden-sharing move that the USA would welcome) or whether it means to create a rival to NATO.
