 The MPG/ESO 2.2-m Telescope
The 2.2m telescope at La Silla has been in operation since early 1984 and is on indefinite loan to ESO from the Max Planck Gesellschaft.
Operation and maintenance of the telescope is the responsibility of ESO.
As part of the overall improvement projects we are in the process of design and installation of baffle rings that should reduce the amount of straight light reaching the instruments attached to the WFI.

ESO was but one of many professional observatories where observations had been planned long before the critical period of the "SL-9" event, July 16 - 22, 1994.
At ESO, ten telescopes were in operation during the first nights, and as in other places, an extremely rich data material was secured.
The possibility of holding a smaller meeting at ESO in February 1995, mainly with the participation of observers in Europe, is now being looked into and a decision is expected to be taken by mid-October 1994.

 Finland Becomes Eleventh ESO Member State
Following the signing of the corresponding Agreement earlier this year (ESO PR 02/04), acceptance by the Finnish Parliament and ratification by the Finnish President of the Agreement as well as the ESO Convention and the associated protocols in June [2] and the deposit of the instruments of accession today, Finland has now officially joined ESO.
ESO warmly welcomes the new member country and its scientific community that is renowned for their expertise in many frontline areas.
For Finland, the membership in ESO is motivated by scientific and technological objectives as well as by the objective of improving the public understanding of science.

 ESO/CDS Data-mining Tool Development Project
ESO and CDS are currently developing the data-mining tools which will allow users to access and combine the information stored in the forms of catalogs at CDS, and catalogs and data at ESO.
ESO has the data collected in the EIS program (deep survey with NTT) and will have in the future data from VLT's observations and other archived instruments in La Silla.
The objectives of this joint project between ESO and CDS are to build tools which will allow astronomers to access a large volume of information in the form of electronic data with the purpose of cross correlation.

It appears that a total of five events were observed at Calar Alto; the last of these was the strongest and most probably corresponds to the impact of fragment Q1.
The weather at La Silla being so bad that observations with TIMMI could not be performed, ESO was pleased to have a running commentary by Dr. Kurt Birkle in the dome of the 3.5-metre telescope at Calar Alto during the Q-impacts.
This daily news bulletin is prepared for the media by the ESO Information Service on the occasion of the July 1994 collision between comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Jupiter.
