ESPN is considered the standard in American sports broadcasting, although it has recently been criticized for unimaginative programming and purposely hiring polarizing, "loudmouth" personalities who are pitted against each other in the "talking heads" format that has plagued cable television news channels.
ESPN was originally owned by a joint venture between Getty Oil Company (which was purchased by Texaco) and Nabisco.
ESPN is available in over 90 million homes in the United States and over 147 countries and territories via ESPN International.
