Clearly the ESV was projected as a version that would deliberately adhere to these guidelines, and this is confirmed in the Preface to the version, which gives three paragraphs in defense of generic masculine terms.

Parableman: Does the ESV Have an Agenda?
I take your point that the ESV translators are not trying to make their translation less gender inclusive than they believe that it really is. But surely Witherington meant that they were making it less inclusive than he, Witherington, understands it to be.
I actually assumed originally that the ESV was more word for word, and maybe it is in general, with reference to pronouns, etc. My expectations of the ESV were that it would be more consistent on gender but I have found that it is not what I expected.
I think that the fact that the ESV states so many different objectives for their translation, that it be formally equivalent, that it retain Greek gender, except when this and that, and if there is a male referent.

The English Standard Version Bible - Translation Philosophy of The ESV Bible   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Indeed, with its emphasis on literary excellence, the ESV is equally suited for public reading and preaching, for private reading and reflection, for both academic and devotional study, and for Scripture memorization.
Similarly, where God and man are compared or contrasted in the original, the ESV retains the generic use of "man" as the clearest way to express the contrast within the framework of essentially literal translation.
In this regard the footnotes that accompany the ESV text are an integral part of the ESV translation, informing the reader of textual variations and difficulties and showing how these have been resolved by the ESV translation team.

The ESV reads: "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, UNTIL TRIBUTE COMES TO HIM, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples." Footnote tells us to compare the Syriac, and Septuagint, but that the Hebrew reads: "until Shiloh comes".
The ESV now has a footnote that tells us their reading of "Rejoice with him, O heavens; bow down to him all gods" comes from "Dead Sea Scroll, Septuagint", but that the Hebrew reads as does the King James Bible.

English Standard Version - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
First and foremost, the ESV is an update of the 1971 edition of the Revised Standard Version (RSV).
In 1997 Christian psychologist and radio host Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family called together a meeting of individuals concerned with these issues, and from it came the "Colorado Springs Guidelines": a set of translation principles that specified when it was and was not appropriate to use gender-neutral language.
After this, permission was sought and granted from the National Council of Churches to use the 1971 revision of the RSV as the English textual basis for the ESV.

In fact, the ESV is so close to the NASB and RSV that it had to obtain copyright permission for its english text, just to make sure that it was not accused of wholesale plagiarism.
What this means, further, is that the ESV is the best candidate yet for the long-hoped-for “replacement” of the KJV, the translation that bridges denominational gaps and strikes the right balance among the virtues of clarity, correctness, and grace.

The literal rendering in the ESV is desirable because it allows teachers to use the version in reference to this dispute about its interpretation.
I would still think it would be helpful for there to be a footnote in the ESV stating what the possible meanings of the literal translations might be, as the NET Bible uses footnotes to explain its translation decisions and present alternative possibilities.
