  Treaties of the European Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Treaty of Paris, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community, which was signed on 18 April 1951, entered into force on 23 July 1952 and expired on 23 July 2002.
The Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (EEC), which was signed - along with the Euratom Treaty - in Rome on 25 March 1957, and entered into force on 1 January 1958.
It amended and renumbered the EU and EC Treaties.

The constitutive treaties of the EU—the Treaty Establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC Treaty), the Treaty Establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom Treaty), and the Treaty Establishing the European Community (EC Treaty)—focused mainly on economic cooperation.
Although individual EU institutions have made human rights declarations and resolutions,11 the Preamble to the Single European [*PG38]Act contained the first reference to human rights in an EU treaty.
First, as some EU treaty provisions allow Member State citizens to bring actions against those who violate treaty provisions, the EU could create a treaty provision that expressly grants clearly defined rights to such an extent that the treaty provision would have direct effect.

EU research may also lead to researching the law of foreign countries which are part of the EU, to look at implementing legislation, case law, etc.
There are two different types of treaties involved with EU research: treaties which define the European Union, called primary legislation and treaties the EU enters into with other governments as part of its foreign policy.

Brussels, Belgium, Jun. 25 (UPI) -- The second round of bilateral treaties between Switzerland and European Union has been initialed by both sides and is set to be signed by late summer.
The right-wing Swiss People's Party has threatened to push for a referendum on security-related sections of the treaty it considers unacceptable, but it is not yet clear whether such a referendum will take place.
The second round of bilateral treaties would require Swiss banks to withhold EU taxes from the interest earnings of EU citizens with anonymous Swiss accounts and would ease border restrictions between Switzerland and the surrounding EU nations.

The EU has law-making institutions, including a Council composed of Ministers who are members of national governments of the Member States, and a directly elected European Parliament.
There are other fields where "laws" (regulations and directives) or treaties can be imposed on the Member States and which they are obliged to implement, or else being faced with having to make lump sum or penalty payments, as well as paying compensation to adversely affected people.
