Topic: EURion constellation

  EURion constellation
A number of new designs of banknotes contain a pattern known as the EURion constellation which can be used to detect their identity as banknotes to prevent counterfeiting using modern inexpensive digital scanners, colour printers, and image processing software.
The EURion constellation consists of a pattern of five small circles, which is repeated across areas of the banknote at different orientations.
The EURion constellation was first detected on the new Euro banknotes.

 EURion constellation Information
The small circles of the EURion constellation are clearly visible on the centre-left of 10 euro banknotes.
The name "EURion constellation" was coined by Markus Kuhn, who discovered the pattern in early 2002 while experimenting with a Xerox colour photocopier that refuses to reproduce banknotes.
The EURion constellation first described by Kuhn consists of a pattern of five small yellow, green or orange circles, which is repeated across areas of the banknote at different orientations.

EURion constellation: Euro banknotes contain a pattern known as the EURion constellation which can be used to detect their identity as banknotes to prevent copying.
Infra-red and ultra-violet watermarks: when seen in the near infrared, the banknotes will show darker areas in different zones depending on the denomination.
Ultraviolet light will make the EURion constellation show in sharper contrast, and also some fluorescent threads stand out.

Coined the “EURion constellation” by computer security expert Markus G. Kuhn because he first noticed it on EURO notes, the EURion constellation consists of a pattern of five 1 mm circles.
The constellation is arranged roughly the same as the astronomical constellation of Orion.
The design details of the EURion constellation remain secret, although there must be at least a handful of people who know all about it due to the fact that so many copier machines (Xerox, etc.) and computer programs (Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, etc.) across the world detect the pattern.

Steven J. Murdoch :: Software Detection of Currency
"Eurion constellation" was used to identify banknotes in the newly deployed software based system, since this has been confirmed to be the technique used by colour photocopiers, and was both necessary and sufficient to prevent an item being duplicated using the photocopier tested.
However further investigation showed that the detection performed by software is different from the system used in colour photocopiers, and the Eurion constellation is neither necessary nor sufficent, and in fact it probably is not even a factor.
Another interesting property of this image is that it seems to be a near minimal test case, since if any changes are made, then it is no longer detected as currency.

Liudvikas Bukys » Blog Archive » the EURion Constellation on banknotes
On the 20 pound note, they appear as “notes” in an unlikely short music score, in the old German 50 mark note, they are neatly embedded into the background pattern, and in the new 20 dollar bill, they are used as the 0 of all the yellow 20 number printed across the note.
The constellation are probably detected by the fact that the squares of the distances of the circles are integer multiples of the smallest one.
I have later been told that this scheme was invented by Omron and that the circle patter also encodes the issuing bank.

The software was originally thought to be recognizing a pattern of five small yellow circles or dots that are scattered across many banknotes called the EURion constellation.
These patterns discovered by Markus Kuhn in 2002 were named for their similarity to the Orion star constellation and for the Euro bank notes on which they were first discovered.

What I find fascinating about this is the way that the banknote designers have incorporated the constellation into their designs.
I have discovered a small constellation of just five circles (a bit like Orion with the belt starts merged) that will be rejected by a Xerox color photocopier installed next door from here as a banknote.
I have later been told that this scheme was invented by Omron and that the circle pattern also encodes the issuing bank.

Though if each country had its own, it would use a lot of CPU cycles to detect.

With the advance of forgery technology, the Bundesbank decided to introduce additional security features on the most important denominations (50, 100, and 200 DM) as of 1996.
These were a hologram foil in the center of the note's obverse, a matted printing on the note's right obverse, showing its denomination (like on the reverse of the new €5, €10, and €20 banknotes), and the EURion constellation on the note's reverse.
Furthermore, the colors were changed a bit to pastel to hamper counterfeing.
