  * EVF - (Photography): Definition
EVF - Electronic ViewFinder, a small color LCD with a magnified lens that functions as an eye level viewfinder.
As the EVF is simply a small colour LCD screen, anything that can be shown on the large TFT screen is also seen in the EVF.
An electronic viewfinder (EVF) functions like the LCD on a digital compact camera and shows in real time what is projected onto the sensor by the lens...

Leica Forum: EVF - What's the point
The EVF does seem adequate as you note, however, I think Leica is capable, and in a sense has a responsibility to do better than "adequate".
EVF is better for me because I can't focus well except at close to arm's length, so the 2 inch display becomes much smaller - the diopter correction in the EVF helps there....
I use the EVF 95% of the time, the major problem with the EVF is the time lag between what happens en the time you see it happen in the finder.

Improving Japanese Pronunciation of American English [r] Using Electronic Visual Feedback
The main advantage of EVF is that it allows students to visualize their pronunciation by associating the patterns on the screen with the sounds they are producing.
This paper focuses on the use of EVF in helping Japanese learners improve their pronunciation of American English [r] (hereafter referred to as AE [r].) The post-test results show general improvement in production of [r] after students were instructed and exposed to EVF training.
EVF is effective as a teaching and learning tool because it allows learners to visualize their pronunciation through associating the acoustic patterns on the screen with the sounds they are producing.

Minolta Dimage 7Hi Digital Camera Review: Viewfinder
The EVF uses a reflective ferroelectric LCD display, with 122,000 pixels in it, a slight increase from the 118,000 pixels of the original Dimage 7.
The EVF on the original Dimage 7 had several deficiencies, some of which are still present with the 7Hi.
In the 7Hi, the EVF display seems somewhat less contrasty (and colors are likewise less saturated) than in the original Dimage 7.

Get the Picture - CNET reviews
Other EVFs try to give you at least a fleeting look at your scene between shots, but in my experience, they just can't hold a candle to the view you get with an SLR.
And EVFs give you a through-the-lens view of your whole image frame that shows both exposure and focus changes, even if not always as precisely as you might like.
Models with EVFs don't have that problem, and in fact, shooting video with them is as close to a camcorder experience as you'll get with a still-image camera.

True and a good idea as well but the diopter adjustment is really about focusing the EVF for your own use.

The EVF website was created about a year and a half ago because of the growth in the glider community and increased responsibilities.
The EVF really should change its name; providing funds for sick and injured gliders is a small fraction of what it does.
The reason for the anonymity is to prevent repercussion from a glider owner whose case was not favorably voted on.

Steves Digicams - Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2 - User Review
In High Precision mode, the EVF is resolute enough to be used for manual focusing, while its Smooth mode increases the refresh rate to 60fps, eliminating the jumpiness of other EVF's and allowing you to easily pan and follow moving subjects.
The EVF can be tilted through a 90-degree range, allowing it to be used at eye or chest-level, while the LCD can be tilted down 20-degrees through up 90-degrees allowing the camera to be used overhead or at waist-level.
While the A2's high-resolution EVF is quite an improvement when used in single-shot mode, you'll still find it much less effective than an optical viewfinder in any of the continuous shooting modes.

The EVF, which you're saying is washed out in sunlight, doesn't seem to be affected by changes to the LCD setup.

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is one area in which the DiMAGE A1 marks a significant departure from the tradition established by the 7, 7i, and 7Hi.
Overall, I think the EVF in the A1 is a worthy upgrade from that of the 7Hi and others before.
Whatever the case, the net result is that the EVF on the Dimage A1 is about as sensitive as my own eyes at a given illumination level, making it eminently usable at any light level most users will care to shoot at.

The EVF on the DiMAGE 7 uses a new type of LCD technology (Ferroelectric LCD) on which Minolta apparently hold some patents.
The EVF on the DiMAGE 7 has an proximity switching feature, when enabled (display mode switch turned to 'A') the display will automatically switch from the rear LCD to the EVF when your eye comes into proximity with the EVF.
Because the main rear LCD and EVF use different display technologies there was a noticeable difference in the colour and gamma of the view provided by each, the EVF always seeming to produce more vivid colours, though sometimes with a slight yellow cast which wasn't apparent on the rear LCD nor in the final images.

The optical and EVF systems each have their merits and problems, with optical being better for detailed studied photographs and the EVF better for video.
I think when you get to the small sensor sizes and lens sizes used in compacts the focused image size is small so you would need to magnify it a lot to view it directly and also I wonder how close the back of the lens is to the sensor.
The bottom line is that regardless of how accurately the EVF reflects the scene you're looking at, it reflects very accurately what you're going to get on the final photograph and that's what I'm interested in.

It's just that until the recent announcement of the Minolta A2, most if not all EVF used by compact digicams were of the same design and specs, so few people complained, and that includes the EVF used in the CP5700, CP8700, Fuji S602, Minolta Dimage A1, Dimage 7i, etc.., and the new Digilux 2.
By comparison, the EVF of the Minolta A2 uses a brand new 922,000 pixel EVF.
