The "Strike Eagle", as it was dubbed, received initial operational capability in October 1989 at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina with the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing.
As the Strike Eagles are more recent than the F-15 and rated for twice the lifetime, they will remain in service well into the middle of the 2020's, perhaps longer.
The deep strike mission of the F-15E is a radical departure from that of the F-15, designed as an air superiority fighter under the mantra "not a pound for air-to-ground".

The 'Strike Eagle' demonstrator was joined by an F-15C and an F-15D which conducted trials with a variety of fuel and ordnance loads, usually with CFTs fitted.
McDonell's 'Strike Eagle' name was not adopted, though some unofficial epithets such as 'Beagle' (Bomber Eagle) and 'Mud Hen' have benn used on occasion.
Although the F-15E is an exceedingly potent warplane for the strike missions, critics point out that its low wing-laoding produces a rough ride, especially for the backseater, and that the F-15E's payload is less than that of the 30-year-old F-111.

Performance requirements called for beyond visual range air-to-air capability, close-in dogfighting capability, twin engines, an internal gun, sufficient ferry range to deploy to Europe without refueling, and a maximum speed of Mach 2.5.
