The Eagles, the self-styled gold standard of NFL franchises, have been tarnished by hitching their star to Owens even if he did help them to the Super Bowl last season.

71786-9 - Fraternal Order of Eagles, Tenino Aerie #564 et al v. Grand Aerie of Fraternal Order of Eagles, et al.
I conclude, therefore, that, in that context, the terms 'fraternal organization' and 'distinctly private' are sufficiently ambiguous to warrant this court to construe the exception -- in light of the liberal purpose of the statute -- strictly and in a way that reinforces accomplishment of that purpose.
In a declaration by one of its officers, the Eagles claim they do not advertise or solicit membership at public functions.130 Nevertheless, the trial court relied on a brochure published by Respondents and distributed for recruitment of new members to infer that the Eagles is 'public' in nature.
It is thus consistent with legislative intent to interpret the statute to exclude organizations determined to be distinctly private from the purview of the WLAD.

The Eagles contend that "the [a]ct cannot be constitutionally applied to the Eagles' membership policy, because a particularized theistic religious belief is a prerequisite to membership * * *." The trial court ruled that this case does not implicate the Eagles' religious freedom because, in essence, they are not being compelled to admit atheists.
