In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

  Eaglet recovers from bee stings
The 27-week-old eaglet joins Arizona's small bald-eagle population, which includes 39 breeding pairs that are watched closely by the state agency and a network of volunteers.
Her survival is due in part to the volunteers who found her after the bee attack and to a wildlife rehabilitation group in Scottsdale that nursed her back to health and taught her how to be an eagle.
In July, Liberty trainers moved the eaglet to an outdoor training pen, where she was taught to fly first and then to hunt and kill food.

Eaglets break through the shell by using their egg tooth, a pointed bump on the top of the beak.
While parents hunt almost continuous to feed them, back at the nest the eaglets are beginning to stretch their wings in response to gusts of wind and may even be lifted off their feet for short periods.
At this time, eaglets are about the same size and weight as the parents (10 to 14 pounds, between 30 and 37 inches in height).

He said if the eaglet had been left alone, its parents would have let it recover from the trauma of flight for a while, then they would have brought it food and coaxed it up off the ground for the night.

The following morning, shortly after the main work parties left for their various fields, Manana’s eaglet was taken carefully from her wagon by some of the remaining gypsies, and moved to a provision wagon, that had been previously prepared for it.
Shortly after the eaglet had been moved into the wagon, the bird had seemed to weaken rapidly, Manana suspected it was a form of shock, and only because she had constantly comforted it, combined with herbs that formed a sleeping draught, she was able to keep it mostly unconscious and maintain the eaglets strength.
