His unit saw intense fighting at times during the week, but surrendered when ordered to do so by his superior officer Patrick Pearse.

One question sometimes raised is why the first name among the 'signatories' was not Pearse but Tom Clarke, a veteran republican.
Had the arrangement of names been alphabetical, Eamon Ceannt would have appeared on top.
Clarke's widow suggested that it was because the plan had been for Clarke, as a famed veteran, to become the President of the Provisional Republic.

As the British reinforcements who had sustained so many casualties yesterday at Mount Street Bridge reached Rialto Bridge, they again came under fire, this time from Eamon Ceannt's men in Marrowbone Lane Distillery and the South Dublin Union.
But this time they were close enough to get help from Portobello Barracks and they stormed the Union buildings, forcing Ceannt's men to retreat.
Again, it was a story of small groups of rebels against large numbers of troops, and in the confined space the small group had the advantage for a while.
