For several years now, Gillian has been to the forefront of Irish and European race-walking, but now she can truly place herself among the world’s best in her sport.
Gillian’s achievement can be put into perspective when one considers that she won only Ireland’s fourth medal at a World Outdoor Championship, and became only the third Irish athlete to win a medal at the World Ourdoor Track and Field Championships, emulating Eamon Coughlan and Sonia O’Sullivan.
Gillian’s time of 1:27.33 was good enough to place her second to Russia’s Yelena Nikolayeva, the World leader this season and current Olympic champion.
