RTE.ie Entertainment - An Accidental Diplomat by Eamon Delaney
This strain between the limitations of diplomatic language and the natural impulses of the writer is palpable in Eamon Delaney's candid and garrulous account of eight years spent as a Third Secretary in Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs.
Delaney has produced a memoir crammed with fascinating detail and memorable characters, while painting a picture of himself as a somewhat reluctant and incredulous bit-player on the broad stage of world affairs.
Delaney may make a few stinging comments about the culture of the UN (the smaller the country, the bigger the limo apparently), but generally he is a passionate supporter of the institution, bemoaning the ill-treatment it has received at the hands of the major powers.

Edward Delaney is one of the most celebrated Irish sculptures of the second half of the twentieth century.
Delaney is best known today for the two major monuments in Dublin, the Wolf Tone Memorial, 1967, on the North East corner of St. Stephens Green and the Thomas Davis Memorial 1966, on the median opposite Trinity College.
Delaney brought much of these qualities into his studio work and this exhibition uses a concentrated selection of his bronzes from the sixties to aid a review of his oeuvre.

That's something borne out in An Accidental Diplomat, Eamon Delaney's perceptive, informative, and hilarious account of his year's in Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs.
Delaney's descriptions of the UN are fascinating, funny, and far from forgettable; while the UN he describes is far from perfect, he observes that this is due to the member states, not the organisation itself:
Delaney's book is deceptively easy to digest; its entertaining style is its most obvious characteristic, but it is a frank and honest work, as enlightening as it is entertaining, which everyone interested in international diplomacy should read.

This piece was prompted by an essay by Eamon Delaney which appeared in The Irish Times earlier this year, on Saturday, June 12, and provided a particularly extreme example of a general malaise.
Delaney goes on, ‘Interesting how few novelists have followed Joyce in his Modernist breakthough: Burroughs, perhaps, or Beckett.’ This is arrant nonsense, since much of subsequent twentieth-century literature is unimaginable without Joyce’s voyage of discovery.
Delaney went on to express his irritation at having to sit down after ‘working hard all week’ and read political correspondent Dick Walsh’s lectures on social inequality, castigating Walsh for the ‘Sticky’ element of his columns, which did not take into account the fact that political debate in Ireland had moved towards the centre.
