An ear is an organ used by an animal to detect sound.
The human ear has ear lobes at the bottom which are vestigial, but serve the purpose of providing an attachment point for earrings.
This is one of the functions of the Eustachian tubes - evolutionary descendants of the gills - which connect the middle ear to the nasopharynx.

An ear is an organ used by an animal to detect sound which isn't always in the same part of the body.
The inner ear contains both the organ of hearing (the cochlea) and the labyrinth or vestibular apparatus, the organ of balance located in the inner ear that consists of three semicircular canals and the vestibule.
In botany, an ear is the fruiting body of a grain plant, such as maize or wheat, borne at the end of the stalk.

Botany of the wheat plant - E.J.M. Kirby
All the structures, such as leaves, tillers and ears, have attained their full size, although not all will be present at maturity because some structures, particularly those produced early in the life cycle, will have senesced and may have rotted or blown away.
In the ear, the phytomer is made up of the spikelet (the axillary bud) and the rachis (node and internode); the development of the leaf is suppressed.
Sometimes, in environmentally stressful conditions, internode elongation is restricted and the ear remains partially enclosed in the flag leaf sheath.

Leverback Earrings -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Earrings are attached to the ear through a piercing in the earlobe or some other external part of the ear, except in the case of a clip earring, which clips onto the lobe.
Earring size is generally limited by the physical capacity of the earlobe to hold the earring without tearing.
Stud earrings - The main characteristic of stud earrings is the appearance of floating on the ear or earlobe without a visible (from the front) point of connection.

Re: How many ears of corn grow on one stalk?
Like all traits, the number of ears on a stalk of corn is subject to some variation.
An ear of corn is an inflorescence, a lateral stem or branch modified to bear flowers, and in the case of maize (the preferable common name because "corn" only means common grain of the region; "corn" in Scotland = oats) only female flowers.
The second reason for only having one or a few ears is that the plant only has a limited amount of resources for producing offspring.

Abstract: The ontogeny of staminate tassels and pistillate ears in the maize mutant Fascicled ear was examined using scanning electron microscopy.
The Fascicled ear mutation promotes the development of an abnormal transition stage axis that is both shorter and broader than the wild type.
This expression of the Fascicled ear mutation may be repeated one to several times, which leads to the development of a fascicled pistillate inflorescence and a fascicled central spike in the staminate inflorescence.

These plants (commonly known as African Masks and Elephant's Ears) are mainly valued for their gorgeous leaves, which are very large, heart- or spade-shaped and beautifully colored and variegated in gleaming shades of green, purple, bluish-green, red and bronze.
Elephant's Ears are excellent when grown as houseplants and can be grown outdoors in mild, tropical climates.
In early spring, the rhizome can be divided into pieces and planted in small pots of peat and sand, which are then placed in a propagating case in the greenhouse.

The ear cultures were routinely subcultured at four week intervals on the same medium and maintained under the same culture environment.
To pollinate in vitro formed ears, anthers were squashed with sterile forceps to shed the pollens on the in vitro grown silks (stigmas).

Two of the ear samples visually scored as Fusarium ear rot and tested for mycotoxin had fumonisin, the mycotoxin associated with Fusarium ear rot, and vomitoxin (2 ppm and 3 ppm), indicating that both molds were causing the ear rot.
