Earendil translates from Old English as light, the first dawn and is derived from Earendel, Old English for Morning Star, and is partly inspired by the legend of Orentil, the mariner whose toe became the morning star.
Earendil possessed this Elfstone as a gift from his mother, Idril, and it was given to her by Enerdhil, the jewelsmith (or in an alternative version, by Celebrimbor).
Earendil became a figure of religious reverence and awe for elves since his appearance as the Morning Star became for them a symbol of hope in one of their darkest hours.

Earendil's voyage to Aman is one of the oldest traditions in the Tolkien legendarium.
Or else Earendil would not realize he had awakened them, and they would have to be abandoned by their son, watching his sails recede into the distance.
Earendil's adventures are thus left unresolved, and the reader must infer that many deeds awaited him when he set sail in Vingelote.

Rotten Tomatoes Forums - Why should Frodo and Bilbo die in Valinor?
Earendil and Elwing were both of the Half-Elven, and from a time before the founding of Númenor and before Aman was taken "out of the circles of the world".
But Earendil and Elwing were, because of the voyage of Earendil, the ones first given the choice to be Elven or human; Elwing chose to be Elf, and Earendil chose that also for love of her.
Then Ulmo asks if Earendil should be counted as one of the house of Tuor (man) (I may have the name wrong) or of the house of Idril and then Mandos responds that either way since the house of Idril is Noldorin and therefore under the Ban of the Valar.

One had the green stone in a gold and silver setting surmounted by a figure of a human on one side and a Minbari on the other and which allegedly shed tears of blood when the Ranger died.
At the end of the book, the possibility that Sinclair is re-united in the distant past with Catherine Sakai (who has been lost in the rift) is strongly implied.
Some of the Minbari who examined him (and other humans) at the Battle of The Line became convinced that Minbari souls were passing to humans and that rather than being reborn in the next generation, they were leaving the Minbari race entirely.

Earendil and Cirdan built a ship so beautiful and bright that the eyes grew too weak, and the heart too full to look upon it long.
And Earendil stood at the helm, with the Silmaril strapped to his brow, and he sailed bravely the sky above.

She had especially loved the tale of Earendil, who, with his beloved wife Elwing at his side and the last of the great Silmarils on his brow, sailed to Valinor, the only mortal to set foot on that blessed shore.
Bilbo used to say that legend claimed if a beam of light from Earendil fell on a child new-born, that he or she would become a "child of Earendil" and would forever be a wanderer, longing for the sea.
He often would chuckle, saying that his own mother must have left him out under the night sky when he was born, because he certainly felt that he fit that description.

This quote also excludes the fact that in the War of Wrath, Earendil led the Eagles of Thorondor against the Great Host of Dragons, which were driving back the Armies of Valinor, and fought for a whole day.
Then, Earendil (through his son Elros) is also responsible for the greatest race of men, the Numenoreans.
