The 1st viscount was also the ancestor of the Earls Annesley in the Irish peerage.

Edmund's son John, 3rd earl, was created marquess of Normanby in 1694, and duke of Buckingham and Normanby in 1703; but on the death of his son, the 2nd duke, without heirs in 1735, the titles became extinct.
The 2nd duke devised the estates of the Sheffield family to his mother Catherine, a natural daughter of James II., who had married as her first husband the 3rd earl of Annesley, by whom she had a daughter Catherine, who married William Phipps and had a son Constantine Phipps.
The 2nd earl of this creation, who like his father held several high cabinet offices, was advanced in the peerage at the coronation of Queen Victoria, being created marquess of Normanby in 1838.

Later in the 1790s the Annesley’s built a new residence in the Castlewellan Estate – a single storey Regency villa on the north shore of the lake known as Castlewellan Cottage.
The cost of construction was £7,000 which was borne entirely by the Annesley family (on the understanding that the family pew was to have it’s own fireplace)along with a donation of £100 per year for a resident clergyman.
However Sophia had a son by the first Earl and fought and lost a legal case to prove the legitimacy of her son by him, and her son’s consequent right to the Annesley earldom and the family estate of nearly £5,500.00 a year.

Delany, wife of the Dean of Down, a tenant of the Annesleys' at Dundrum, wrote to her sister informing her that the Annesleys had 'walled in and planted with oak, etc., three hundred and fifty acres of ground for a park.
Annesley is going to build a town.' The family commissioned a French architect to design the demesne and estate and work on the town was in progress in 1764.
It was during the lifetime of the fourth Earl, in 1856, that the present Castle was built.

Upon that event two memorials were presented to the Earl of Halifax, the lord-lieutenant of Ireland: one by Sir John Annesley and the other by the Countess Juliana, on behalf of her infant son Arthur, both claiming the Irish honours of Viscount Valentia and Baron Mountnorris.
The earl by his will had entailed his estates upon the issue of his son Arthur, whose right to the Irish titles was reinvestigated on the petition of John Annesley of Ballysax, Esq., but was confirmed, and who in 1793 was created Earl of Mountnorris.

Matriculated on 15 July 1690 at Oxford's Christ Church, he took his seat in the Irish House on 27 August 1695 and in the English House on 23 November 1695.
However, on 12 June 1701 by Act of Parliament, they were separated on grounds of his cruelty.
Shortly afterwards, on 21 January 1702, he died and, as he left only an infant daughter, it was his brother who became the next Earl of Anglesey.
