Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, KG, MC, PC (June 12, 1897– January 14, 1977), British politician, was Foreign Secretary during World War II and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the 1950s.
The Suez fiasco ruined Sir Anthony's reputation for statesmanship and led to a breakdown in his health.
The Earl of Avon died from liver cancer in Salisbury in 1977 at the age of 79.

As leader of the Parliamentary opposition, the Whigs, he was partly responsible for the Exclusion Bill crisis (1678-1681), a failed attempt to bar the heir-apparent, the Catholic James II, from the throne in favour of Charles II’s illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth.
Shaftesbury entered the House of Commons for the borough of Poole in 1695 and, succeeding as third Earl in 1699, attended regularly in the House of Lords for the remainder of William III’s reign.

The crewcut, bespectacled Anthony was one of bowling's most familiar faces when the sport was a weekly fixture on television in the 1970s, and he was its first player to break the $1 million barrier in winnings.
Anthony is survived by his wife Susie; a son, Mike, and daughters Tracy Nelson and Jeri Voyles.
