The Brassey Hotel, named after Sir Thomas Brassey, Governor of Victoria from 1885 to 1900 and first Earl of Brassey from 1911 until his death in in 1918, was completed in 1927 to coincide with the establishment of the Federal Parliament in Canberra.
Brassey House, as it was known then, represented one of the very few accommodation houses in Canberra during this early period.
Designed by architects Budden and Hood and built by Colonel James Walker, one of the more unusual features of the Brassey is that it is rumored to have been built back to front, in that the grand entrance faces the quiet Belmore Gardens, while a more modest façade faces the busy thoroughfare of Macquarie Street.

FIRST EDITION, with a presentation inscription by Lord Brassey to J. Hichens "In Memoriam." The Last Voyage is a compilation of notes, journals, articles and letters edited by M. Broome, assistant to Lady (then Mrs.) Brassey, and published posthumously.
Their last such voyage began in November 1886 and took them from Portsmouth, England, through the Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal to the Red Sea, India, Burma, around Australia and back, where Lady Brassey died of malarial fever after leaving Port Darwin and was buried at sea.
Lord Thomas Brassey (1836-1918), Lady Brassey's husband, the first Earl Brassey and the eldest son of Thomas Brassey the famous British railway builder, was "a recognized authority on English naval affairs.
