  News- Bang the drum loudly
Earl Harvin Trio's new record is double the brilliance, which might be the trouble
Harvin and his bandmates never intended for At the Gypsy Tea Room to be a double record; they know how difficult such albums are to sell, how imposing it can be for someone to buy two discs when most people never finish one.
Harvin and pianist-organist Dave Palmer's compositions--their children--had grown up and grown out of their clothes; they needed room to stretch out, room to hop and skip and jump until they simply ran out of breath.

Earl Harvin is *perfect* with this band--'nuff said.
An electric Thompson show is a precious commodity, which he and the band made the most of with a 21-song, 2 1/4-hour set that touched on his typically superb new album, "The Old Kit Bag," and reached back to what should have been his greatest hits.
Unexpectedly different endings on many songs, often showcasing the subtlety of Earl's drumming --- the one that has stayed very vivid for me is Shoot Out the Lights, the coda drawn out into an otherworldly collection of tiny sounds from all the instruments, with lots of space in between.
