The title Earl Nelson, of Trafalgar and of Merton in the County of Surrey, was created in 1805 for William Nelson, older brother of the late admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson.
The Earl bears the subsidiary titles of Viscount Merton, of Trafalgar and of Merton in the County of Surrey (1805), and Baron Nelson, of the Nile and of Hillborough in the County of Norfolk (1801).

He was born June 17, 1924, in Anson, and was one of 12 children of LaBarron and Bertha (Smith) Nelson Sr.
While in the army he was awarded the Silver Star for his gallantry in action on the Fifth Army front in Italy during World War II.
