Earl V. Shaffer (November 8, 1918 - May 5, 2002), was an American outdoorsman and author known from 1948 as The Crazy One (and eventually as The Original Crazy One) for attempting what became the first documented hiking trip over the entire length of the Appalachian Trail (AT).
Shaffer enlisted in the army in 1941, was well along in his training at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, and did arduous and risky service as a forward-area radioman in the South Pacific into 1945.
Shaffer is said to have regarded completing the planned AT hike as a way of recovering from the stress of his combat experiences and from the loss of friends who died in the war.

In 1948 Shaffer returned home from World War II, and hiked the 2,050 miles from Georgia to Maine to, quote, "walk the Army out of my system." The trail was sorely neglected: portions were overgrown, shelters abandoned, and trail markers were badly faded.
Shaffer was not only first to hike the trail, he was first to hike it in both directions.
Shaffer made it in four months, an impressive accomplishment considering that even today, on a well marked trail, most hikers take five to six months to complete the hike.
