Warrick already gave a description on this but i'd like to add the reason Earl hates Pearl is because when their father dies she went off to become a singer leaving Earl all alone to take care of their mother.
Earl is suckered into taking the family to the new WE SAY SO theme park but once they're there they find out on 1/4 of the park is ready and it won't be complete for another five years, they decide to leave but are not allowed until their time at the theme park is up.
Earl meets Roy at the theme park and they both stand in a long line just cause it's long and eventually find out it's for renting strollers, they do so and at the end Earl and family spend their vacation in their hotel room playing a game they made up using the stroller.

Warrick, born in 1911 in Butler, Pennsylvania, devoted his career to polymers and elastomers; he invented silicone rubber and held, singly or jointly, 44 US patents.
During World War II, Warrick and fellow researcher Rob Roy McGregor were trying to work up a synthetic rubber that could serve as a workable substitute in the wake of wartime shortages.

Silly Putty was created during World War II either by Corning Glass Works scientists Rob Roy McGregor and Earl Warrick, or by James Wright, a GE researcher.
‘‘Dr. McGregor and I got the patent,’’ Warrick said in a recent telephone interview from his home in Midland, Mich. ‘‘It was five years before General Electric got their patent.
U.S. Patent Office records show McGregor and Warrick applied in March 1943 for a patent on ‘‘treating dimethyl silicone polymer with boric oxide.’’ They received the patent in December 1947.

Coming Glass had originally been looking into silicone to provide caulking material for their glass brick products that were popular in the 1930~s.16 Though not a good substitute for mortar, silicone was observed to have rubber-like properties that inspired further research during the rubber shortages in World War II.
At the request of Admiral Rickover, Hyde collaborated with Earl Warrick to produce the first polydimethylsiloxane fluid in 1940.17 However, the small quantities produced by Corning Glass did not satisfy the military's requirements.
Warrick states that over the next 10 years, over 600,000 such shunts, using Silasticml tubing had been implanted.

Randall Houlding was a wealthy and adventuresome colonial entrepreneur from Rhode Island with connections to the Lord of Warrick, the wealthiest man of his time.
In 1923 he married Ruth Hulett, the only daughter of Clarence Earl Hulett, and his wife, Helen Eggers, an Icelandic orphan who had come to Marengo on an "orphan train." She had a brother Clarence Earl Jr., who lived the greater part of his life in Louisiana and Texas, and left a number of antecedents.
Earl graduated from Marengo High School, and attended one year at the University of Illinois on a scholarship.
